SUBCRIPTION RATES @ne year, e WANTED—A NAME In the old unregenerate days before the crash of 1929, and years before FDR and NRA, the condition which exists . in Nevada county today would have been called a BOOM. ° But too many distressing things have transpired in the . meantime. The name “BOOM” is in sad disrepute. New! words have come into being and a whole flock of popular remedies for the Depression, which are known chiefly by their initials. Calling things by their initials of course originated in the World War. Becbably SOS older even than the World War, is the granddaddy of all the abbreviated nomenclature to which the Roosevelt administration has given birth. The NRA, the fairhaired boy of this newly born host, of course, leads all the rest with the AAA hot footing close behind. But what word shall we use instead of BOOM? The word “BOOM” smacks too much of inflation, kiting realty values,: pop-eyed excitement, the rush and hurry of multitudes setting off toward the maelstrom of tremendous speculation, where thousands lose their little all and scores make huge fortunes overnight. Nevada County has had enough of booms and that deadly recession, when the shouting dies away and the high waters flow back off the mountains into the. cities and valleys deaving the thriving metropoli of the Sierras, nothing but derelict enterprises, flotsam and jetsam, wreckage and spoilage strewn hither and yon, and memories of the glories that were. But there is a condition in Nevada County, a condition ‘of growing prosperity, that needs a word to describe. A thous: and more people, it is conservatively estimated, areliving here than were here six months ago. Six hundred more men are employed in the mines than were employed six months ago. _ Amillion (and probably more) dollars have undoubtedly been added to the capital investment in Nevada County in the last six months. The monthly payroll has jumped from around $150,0000 to $250,000 in the last six months. : Practically every business site in Grass Valley and Nevada City is occupied by firms which are reaching out success. . fully for more business. The two cities of the county are as full of people as a sausage skin is full of meat. The word “BOOM” is taboo. There has rarely been a boom that was not followed’ by disaster. And this growth‘ of the mining industry in Nevada County has none of the earmarks of an old fashioned pre-Depression boom. It is rather a steady infiltration of investment money and of people. What shall we call this fortunate condition in Nevada County? If it must be a phrase rather than a woord, then let us adopt some initials, not already appropriated by the administration in Washington, three or four letters that shall stand for a new, and we devotedly hope a permanent, era of prosperity in Nevada County.
