SEF LOOSE. oe ye a 4—Nevada City, California, Friday, December 15, 1950 Be 6 and Mrs. Beatrice Butcher, Society Reporter, Phone 486 Chub Vews Grass Valley Woman Talks On Christmas in Other _Lands to Civic Club Here The Nevada City Women’s Civic Clebymet Friday at the National Hotel where a_ delicious turkey dinner was served in the banquet room whitch had previ’ ously been beautifully decorated by Mrs. Betty Leiter, Mrs. Vicki Schmidt and Mrs. _ Beatrice Butcher. A cathedral which played ‘“Silent Night,’”’ an electrically lighted Christmas tree, Santa Clauses by the score, lighted candles, silver-sprayed greens, boughs, and countless other appropriate articles adorned the tables. Mrs. Ruth Hutton, Grass Valwvley, speaker for the day; Mrs. Belle Brock, junior past president; and Mrs. Butcher, the president, were given lovely corsages of. gardenias by the club. ‘Among the guests who were present were Mrs. Lou Shannonhouse, Mrs. Clayre Lipman, and Mrs. Jo Bell, of Nevada City; Mrs. Meta Harris of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Christine Witter, Mrs. Catherine McNully, Mrs. Nellie Parsons, and Mrs. Ruth Hutton, Grass Valley; and the latter’s mother, Mrs. K. McNabb, Who is visiting here. Mrs. McNabb’s home is in the San Fernando Valley. : Members present were Mrs. Arthur Hoag, Mrs. Harriet Farmer, Mrs. Betty Leiter, Mrs. Vicki Schmidt, Mrs.'H. W. Whipp, Miss Gertrude Goyne, Mrs. Ma, Tie Harris, Mrs. Marie Hilpert, Mrs. Marian Feagan, Mrs. Nettie _Gildersleeve, Mrs. Lila Stark, Mrs. Belle Brock, Miss Emma Ramm, Mrs. Isabel Tourtelotte, Mrs. Annie Murchie, Mrs. Mae Raddue and Mrs. Lillian Moman. Mrs. .Harriet Farmer played Santa Claus and the gifts were held up to be admired. Mrs. Brock presented the pres-' ident with a very unique gift to be autographed by all those attending. A large white apron on which was designed a Christmas tree with red and green ric-rac braid and bells to be used thruout . the holidays as a yuletide memento. Mrs. Hutton of Grass Valley gave a most interesting talk on “Christmas in Other Lands,” and The Nugget will publish it next week as a Christmas feature. The Sweet Adeline singers en. joyabley presenter four Christmas carols directed by William Tobiassen. Mrs. Pearl Hambly accompanied the singers at the -piano. They included Mrs. Wanda: Tobiassen, Mrs. Ethel Bush, . Mrs. Mary Cassettari, Mr. Chritine Sonke, Mrs. Beryl Mott, Mr. Lillian Mott, Mrs. Harriet Farmer, Mrs. Kathryn Celio, Mrs. Emily Jessup, Mrs. Ardis O’Neil and Mrs Jeanne Rausch. Christmas Carols on Broad Street Next Saturday Christmas carols will be sung Friday evening, next week, at 7;30 p.m., in front of the Alpha Hardware Co. store, by 14 members of the popular Sweet Adeline Club. William Tobiassen will conduct the carolers. Mrs. Ethel Bush and Mrs. Pearl Hambly wiil be co-hostesses for little daughter, Linda, and infant: 'Meet on Wednesday thetJan. 3 meeting at the home of Mrs. Ethel Bush on Mill St., Grass Valley. Ridge Road Garden Club Enjoys Chicken Pie Lunch The Ridge Road Garden Club ‘met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Lou Shannonhouse. Mrs. Arta Sursa, Mrs. Edie Johnson and Mrs. Myrtle Weiss were the cohostesses for a luncheon not soon to be forgotten. Mrs. Sursa’s individual chicken pies, the salads brought by Mrs. Johnson, and the individual upide-down cakes with the deliclous rum saucé made by Mrs. Weiss was a pleasant surprise to the 23 members and guests. Mrs. Vivian Hartman had decerated Santa Claus cookies and other appropriate characters and which were placed before each member at the tables. Mrs. Clara Buckbee of Town Talk and Mrs. Dora Johnson of Santa Rosa also enjoyed the yule party which followed the business meeting. The January meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Rosanne Mitchell with Mrs. Tillie Valdix and Mrs. Marj Raddue serving as co-hostesses. Plans will be made for decorating the Ridge road with flowering trees. Mrs. Mae Raddue and Mrs. Mary Longmier will be the program chairman. The arts and crafts section will also meet in January in the new home of Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Lang Jr. The members will be instructed in the making of ming trees and shadow boxes by Mrs. Mary Longmier, of Alta Hill, who is also a member. Mrs. Browning and Mrs. Young Honored by Circle Mrs. Minnie Young and Mrs. Annie Browning were honored as 50-year charter members of Champion Circle No. 325, at a meeting Thursday: night, last week, with Guardian Neighbor Ray Wilde, . presiding. Mrs. Browning was a charter ‘member of Arbor Vitae Circle, Woodcraft, Grass Valley, and had 'transferred to Nevada City. Try this menu: eggs goldenrod or Welsh rabbit on enriched toast, crisp lettuce salad, and steamed pudding, with hot coffee. , STEAMED CRANBERRY PUDDING. 2 cups sifted enriched flour Y% cup molasses spoon salt y cup water / j cup shortening ~ rs 3 1 cup whole cranberry sauce 4 cup sugar WY cup walnuts Sift together flour, soda and salt.’ Cream ther shorianane and sugar until light and fluffy. A molasses and eggs and beat thoroughly. Combine water and cran‘{n nuts. Pour into greesed one and one-half quart mold. Cover, or tie a double layer of waxed paper securely over top of mold, Steam ne hour and 1§ minutes. Unmold. berry sauce. Dessert Luncheon Feature Of Blue Tent Garden Meet The Blue Tent Garden Club met Wedneday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Clement Sins. Dessert luncheon was served on a lace covered table, centered with a flower arrangement of beautiful white chrysanthemums. The color ssheme was blue and white and the gayly wrapped Christmas packages lay at the foot of a lovely tree from which hung a auge silver star. Master Charles Sins played the role of Santa Claus. The Sweet Adeline Cleb met Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. Lillian Mott to practice the Spann meet nec Loretta Dillard Elected Girl’ Scout President Loretta Dillard was elected president of Girl Scout Troop No. 1 at the Wednesday meeting at Girl Scoct hall, which with presided over by Leader Mrs. Louise Kyle and Mrs. William Fisher. Janet Haley conducted the girl scout meeting as president. The opening flag ceremony was led by Nancy Scholefield. The Scouts presented the colors, gave Scout oath and sang “God Bless America.” Other officers elected were Barbara Elliott, vice president; Judy Narramore, secretary; and Mary Oprisko, treasurer. The scouts planned to help the distribution of candy at the yule show at the Cedar theatre next Friday. The troop’ will have its Christmas party next Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Mildred Tobiassen Named President of Local Gold Star Mothers Unit. Sierra Chapter of Gold Star Mothers, Inc., met Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Carl Tobiassen. A pot-luck luncheon preceded the business meeting and election of officers. Wednesday, Jan. 10, will be the next meeting night at the Veterans Memorial hall in Grass Valley. with installation of officers the following Sunday. Pot-luck luncheon’ will be served to members and _ their families before the installation. Mrs. Mena Huefner, past president of the chapter, has been visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Leah Abraham, in Grass Valley, for several weeks but plans to return to her other daughter’s home in Spokane, Wash. ° Mrs. Abraham was a guest at the luncheon and assisted her mother to play Santa: Claus and distributed the lovely gifts the members had brought to exchange with one another. The -Tobiassen home was very festive with a Christmas tree and table decorations. A huge crocheted basket, filled with ornaments, had been placed in the center of the table, and at its base, candied wreaths encircled this unusual centerpiece. Tiny red crocheted baskets filled with candies were placed before each guest and both the wreaths and baskets were taken home as favors. The Gold Star Mothers will send cartons of cigarettes to the sons of members now in the service as a Christmas token. Ponemah Council Names New Officers Ponemah Cocncil No. 6, Degree of Pocahontas, elected new officers at a meeting Friday evening at the Odd Fellows Hall. Named were Mrs. Loretta Baldwin, Prophetess; Mrs. Alice Jenkins, Pocahontas; Mrs. Erma Ryason, Wenonah; Clifford Lester, Powhatan. Two palefaces were adopted: Mrs. Ella McCall and Mrs. Lowise Gonzales. Mrs. Ryason and her*committee prepared a turkey dinner. The Christmas party will be held Wednesday, Deé. 27.
