High Honors for California 4-H'ers
Donald Rosedale, 21, of Yorba
Linda, found that plenty of hard
work and diligent study helped
him reach the top in the 4-H Tractor Maintenance program. Acquiring the know-how to care for and
operate the family tractor meant
considerable savings in time and
money, too. Don has been a, club
member for 12 years. Although the
tractor maintenance program has
only been carried on in California
a year, Don has given several demonstrations on his project (cooling
system), together with several
talks to the Farm Bureau. He has

7 best records in the 1950 National 4-H Dress Revue, Garden and
ca on Maintenance programs. Their awards—trips to the National
-H Club Congress, Chicago, Nov. 26-30—were provided by the proSram sponsors. Highlights of their club careers are told below.

Avery Poling, 19, of Placentia,
not only grew prize-winning vegetables and. fruits this season, but
also was chosen state champion
in the national 4-H Garden program. Avery’s trip award was proAvery Poling

only a half-dozen rows of onions

4-H’er, Avery has been junior
leader four years, and has held
several other offices in his club.
In the twenty-two projects he
completed he has received 15 blue
ribbons and three red ribbons. He
was chosen county All-Star for
1949.
All of these activities are conducted under the direction of the
Extension Service of the State Agricultural’ College and USDA cooperating.
FIREMEN APPROVE
BLOOD BANK PLAN
Nevada City’s two volunteer
fire department companies, Hose
Company No. 1 and Pennsylvania
Engine Company No. 2, unanimously approved action of board
of fire delegates whereby the department will sponsor a_ blood
bank in. Nevada City.
The bank was suggested by
Charles W. Veale, superintendent
of Nevada county hospital.
Fire Chief John M. Graham announced that as soon as necessary
information is received a method
of obtaining a liht of donors will
be devised and published.

NID SEEKS STATE
DISASTER FUNDS
Application to the California
Department of Public Works for
$4,000 of state matching funds for
repair of flood damage to Nevada
Irrigation District waterways and
roads was authorized at Friday’s
meeting’ of the NID directors.
The money comes from a special emergency flood fund set up
‘in 1947 and administered by the
Department of Public Works and
allocated through the state engineer’s office.
_ Rudy Smith, district superintendent, and Charles Law, agent
for the directors, estimated flood
damage to the district is $8,000.
Survey of damage to date follews: Mountain division roads,
$1,200; Texas creek flume, bridge
. phon, $500; Excelsior forebay debris, $1,800; and Excelsior system
flume, $1,800.
The board is opening negotiations for the employment of an
assistant engineer.

GREYHOUND SUED FOR
$42,699 DAMAGES
Pacific Greyhound Lines has
been named defendant in separate suits totaling $42,699.50 filed
Friday in Nevada county superior court by two women as a result of injuries allegedly received
when a bus left highway 40 and
crashed ‘over an embankment on
May 17. «'
The suits were filed by Miss
Ruth K. Swan and Miss Anne
E. Browne, both of the bay area.
Miss Swan asks $30,000 general
damages and $2,228.29 special
damages. Miss Browne asks for
$10,000 general damages and
$470.21 special damages.
Both women are represented
by W. I. Follett, Alameda. county attorney.
