J THE THIRTY HOUR WEEK The Americn Federation of Labor is demanding a thirtyhour week as a solution of the unemployment problem, and we believe they are right. Out of all the theories that have been advanced as the cause of the depression and unemployment there is one that stands out—the development of labor saving machinery. Engineers; economists and real thinkers are agreed that here is the principal cause of the worst depression in the history of the world. During the presidential campaign many theories were advanced, many accusations were made. The tariff and other contributing factors were blamed for the evils that beset us. From the Democratic viewpoint nothing the Republicans advocated was right, and vice versa. The political viewpoint is seldom sound or correct. The great thinkers of America are not primarily. Republicans or Democrats. They are not governed by partisan motives or objectives. Engineers, scientists and others who are in a position to think clearly know. that machinery is the basic cause of the present widespread unemployment. And the only way you can put the great mass of the unemployed back to work is to reduce the hours of work. With the industrial machine running eight hours a day or 48 hours a week we have overproduction. When the product of the machine is not taken away the machine has to stop. So the demand of the American Federation of Labor is just, logical and sound and must sooner or later be adopted if: American life is to be restored to a normal and healthy condition. Right now we have about twelve million idle men in the United States. On the other hand we have men who are working as high as 16 hours aday or 96 hours a week. Labor unions generally are working for the shorter work week and in many cases it has been adopted: It is to be hoped’ that government in the future will be based on a better understanding of economics. The crushing defeat of the Republican party was due to the fact that the leaders of. the Republican party did not understand what was going on or make any preparations to avoid disaster. If the Democratic administration profits by past experience and recognizes fundamental economic laws, the United States is going to come out all right and in course of a-year or so we will have a sane prosperity based on the fact that every man is entitled to the right to make a living. = ERR RTA EAR TE CEA A CE ER CEA CT AA CE LR EA LN AE AE LAER OE % .
