NEVADA CITY NUGGET FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1938, Nevada City Nugget 305 Broad Street. Phone 36. A Legal Newspaper, as defined by s atute. Printed and Published at Nevada City. ae H. M. LEETE Editor and PublisherPublished Semi-Weekly, Monday and Friday at Nevada City, California, and entered as mail matter of the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 8, 1879. ye SUBSCRIPTION RATES “One year (In Advance) osterteofesteateateatenfeateateatecteatertes, BS iikivies cS THE OLD SHIRT NEEDS MENDING “Sin Death In The Pen slow death in San Quentin’s new death chamber where lethal fumes of gas now exact the supreme penalty of doomed men. Already the tides of opposition are beginning to mount against this chamber of retribution. Proposals to abolish it, and supplant it with other deathdealing methods, constitute in themselves a clue to the reasons for opposition to the gas chamber. : One measure, which the state legislature will shortly hear about, proposes the electric chair. Another, also to be advanced soon at Sacramento, goes so far as to recommend the introduction of the firing squad. These clearly indicate that the disturbing aspect of the gas chamber, which has unnerved prison officials, newspapermen, and most other spectators, is its gruesome slowness. Even the gallows, by comparison, appears more humane in the view of these people. If it were the purpose of the death penalty to inflict not only punishment. but torture as well, then the gas chamber! would have much to recommend it. But in modern’times, at . least, it has been the aim of the state to remove the life of its doomed criminals as humanely and expeditiously as possible. Torture belongs to an older.age than ours—in America, at: least!—but if the accounts of eyewitnesses at San Quentin hold any merit, then torture is what takes place in death by cyanide fumes. The issue here is not whether capital punishment is good or bad. but simply which of several methods is the quickest. ca regard.—Contributed. The village blacksmith and the town general store, in their day, exercised virtual monopolies in their communities until modern transportation and mass merchandising abolished their control. The intelligent citizen may find one of the most clearcut statements on the matter in this definition by Chester H. Gray, a very perceptive business executive: ‘From the public point of view, a monopoly may be defined as being a cor‘porate aggregation’ strong enough, whether big or little, in capital and physical assets and favored enough by law and regulation to dictate prices of the commodity handled by it, and " to throttle competition, all of which results in the ultimate con‘sumer paying more.” This definition will prove unpopular with crusading poli‘ticians whose zeal leads them to ignore the consumer's interest while trying to destroy the mass retail systems, which do only 22 per cent of all retail business. But in connection with the present inquiry, it emphasizes the difference between monopoly and bigness, and between bigness and badness—a source of confusion which has often placed the public at the mercy of politicians.—Contributed. “All Is Forgiven!’ After serving two years in penitent exile, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor are to be welcomed home, at long last, to England. “ This was the gist of the meetings between the Duke and _ Prime Minister Chamberlain in Paris recently, and last week the ex-king’s brother, the Duke of Kent, again confirmed it. _ The first of England’s 38 monarchs to abdicate, the former Prince of Wales is now the first of the world’s exiled royalty to receive Christmas greetings cheerily beckoning, “Welcome home, all is forgiven!” _ Love again conquers all—and when it so soon conquers 3-seated British conservatism its triumph is redoubtable.— ributed.
