It involves the immediate boring of a temporary railroad tunnel under the west abutment of the dam in the Sacramento canyon near Redding, to »“ermit construction of the dam itself to proceed simultaneously with relocation of 37 miles of the Southern Pacific's main line now located with in the reservoir site. San Francisco contractors, Eaton & Smith. this week submitted a low bid of $306,500 for the interior work in the engineering shop and repair docks at the Sacramento Air Depot. Low bidder for installation of electrical work was the Reliable Elevator Works of Sacramento, bid being $107,200, and the Cory &Joslin Company of San Francisco submitted low bid, $59,783, for installation of heating and ventilating system. Thousands of Californiians each year, maimed, blind and deafened through industrial accidents and ofierwise, are being educated in the trades and professions to which they are adaptable to become self-supporting, H. D. Hicker, Chief of the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, revealed thsi week. California has ranked first among states carrying on such a campaign for the last two years. Hicker said that iby this means of education it relieves: the government and relatives iof the burden of support of persons so_ afflictted. Training is given in public schools where the courses are available and in ‘priyate schools where they are not. LAVA CAP CONSTRUCTS DAM FOR TAILINGS Tailings dam covering 5 acres of ground is being constructed at cost of $12,000 at Lava Cap Mines Company property, Nevada County, California. According to Otto E. Schiffner, general manager, Box 780, Nevada City, California, -dam’s construction was decided upon following notice from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. that present ‘dam is inadequate and likely to-pollute water used for domestic and irrigation purposes in Placer county following heavy run off of water during rainy months which carry the tailings with it. Dam, to be completed by December 1, will be 25 feet hgih, height to be increased as needed. Dam is expected to hold the tailings from the 350 ton mill at Central mine of Lava Cap for 4 or 5. years. New 300 HP hoist is practically complete at the.Central: shaft. Mill is also being increased by 50 tons to 350 tons daily capacity. Approximately 250 men are employed by Lava Cap at its 2 properties, the Banner and the Central. —From Mining and Industrial News.
