MONDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1939 We use this means to express our appreciation for the sympathy and kindness extended to us in the hour of. our bereavement and especially to thank the many friends for their fiolences and tributes of flowers onoring the memory ‘of our dear father. NEXT P. T. A. MEETING IN JANUARY The Elementary School P: T. A: has postponed their meeting until some time in January due to so many Christmas activities being planned before the first of the year. Nevada City Distributors NEVADA CITY NUGGET Tequested that notiee be PAGE Security Committee, today called attention to initiation of payments under the Federal Old Age Insurance program on January 1, 1940. Announcement was made in a letter addressed by the State Chamber to all city chambers of commerce and to all employer members which sent to ‘évery eligible employee. The Federal Old Age Insurance, when first enacted into law, contemplated a starting date of January 1, 1942, and afforded benefits only to workers who retired at the age of 65. This was modified, however, by the 76th Congress, with increased benefits and advancing the starting date for payments to January 1, 1940. Additional benefits, under the modified act, include benefits to dependent wife of a retired worker, of fifty per cent of the amount paid him; additional benefits for children under the age of 18; benefits for widows, orphans, and dependent parents over the age of 65, of workers who have become deceased before age of retirement and who have qualified under the act. It was pointed out by the State Chamber that application for benefits under the Old Age Insurance Act would relieve counties of thousands of dollars now being expended for relief and welfare without adding anything to the present tax burden of the county. Application for benefits under the Federal Old Age Insurance Act must be made at 21 local California offices of the Social Security Board. Application may be filed before January 1, 1940. ALONG CHANNEL LOS ANGELES, Dec, 18.—Catalina Island, twenty miles off southern California, may be 30,000,000 years older as a land area than other islands of the channel group or of parts of the coastal mainland itself. Such is the theory advanced by Dr. Francis P. Shepard of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dr. U. S. Grant of the University of California at Los Angeles, and R. S. Dietz of the University of Illinois, after making a geological study of the island. It disputes a former theory which claimed that Catalina Island was the same age as others in the channel group. The former theory held that all islands off Southern California has been uplifted from the sea during the Pleisocene times. The discovery of marine ‘fossils and wave cut terraces on Catalina Island were offered as.evidence that it, too, had been uplifted at the same time as the others. A re-examination of this evidence according to Shepard, Grant and duction of “Drums Along the Mohawk.” This 20th Century Fox picture depicts’in Technicolor the days when torch and tomahawk spread their terror in New York’s beautiful Mohawk Valley, based on Walter D. Edmonds’ best selling novel. The screen play by Lamar Trotti and Sonya Levien gives Claudette Colbert and Henry Fonda the roles of pioneer lovers who with the other colonists in the valley have to face the fierce onslaught of the savage Iroquois. While a heart warming romance is thus assured, the most outstanding feature of “Drums Along the Mohawk” is its action. The screen has proved itself time and again as the best medium for portraying scenes like these, but never has it shown more powerfully. One is literally frozen to one’s seat at the tense realism of the Indian battie sequences, heightened in their effect by the Technicolor. Technicolor does its inimitable bit too in portraying the beautiful valley, thanks to the work of Caneraman Bert Glennon, who photographed “‘Stagecoach.”’ Deitz, itfvestes’ that arate has been elevated since Miocene — times — possibly 30,000,000 years — earlier than the Pleistocene age. = The existence of shell deposits ana rounded pebbles on Catalina Islan@ shows merely that the island has been elevated since Miocene tim or that they may -have been Pei . there by Indians. The flat summits of the mountains and the poorly ddveloped terraces probably date bac to \a pre-Pleistocene age, the three scientists point out. Subscribe for the Nugget.
