NEVADA CITY: NUGGET MONDAY, Be. 1939
~—susr WonneriIn’
'] wonder as the magic hour draws near
And chiming bells proclaim the holy night,
If one fair star will shine across the world
Leading the way to justice, truth and right;
And shall we then behold the dream
That haunts the dusky vista of the years,
And hear the silvery, overtones of peace
Bidding us cast aside our doubts and fears.
‘ . wonder how the Christmas Spirit will come to the world
this year; in what guise will he appear? What gifts ‘will he bestow upon distraught humanity?. What will his mission be?
I see the Christmas Spirit at the midnight hour of his advent. I see him standing upon some lofty height gazing out
over the raging maelstrom of hate ‘and strife into which, nation after nation has been drawn since last we felt his gracious
presence near. . see his once smiling visage marred by lines
of pain and sorrow. I see his kindly eyes bedimmed with tears.
I wonder how we may best welcome the Christmas
Spirit to a world whose ways have grown so strangely foreign
to his own. Perhaps by hiding our own bewilderment and
pain, by ringing the sweet old bells and uttering the same joyous greetings, by recapturing in so far as we may, the merriment of the season—its tender kindness and its tolerance toward one another, and to all the world. :
_ Surely, by casting aside our doubts and fears in the assurance that conditions which now appal us, cannot last indefinitely. Right will ultimately rule the world of men, truth.
honor and justice must finally prevail.
The star still shines
above the darkest cloud; above the din and clash of arms, we
may, if we will but listen, still hear the silvery overtones of
peace. “Sorrow may endure for a night, but joy cometh. in the
morning.”
I wonder what that little unclothed cherub, the New Year
will think of this troubled world. Will he refuse to take over
until given a rough rider's outfit and a machine gun? Or will
he stare about. wide eyed and say: “‘oh dear, dear, the times
are certainly out of joint; adjustments are sadly needed. Now.
if . can only induce these humans to help me, during the next
three hundred and sixty five days, we can fix things up in
good order, and have this broken down mechanism functioning as it should after its long years of trial and error.”
How may we help the little bemused New Year, to perform his gigantic task of ruling the world during 1940? Simply by keeping our individual spheres of influence, no matter
what their limitations, as sane, orderly, confident and peaceful as is humanly possible—never forgetting to, at all times.
exercise those virtues of tolerance, co-operation and good
will, which seem so essentially desirable during the Yule-tide
season. May our messages of good will resound around the
world.
Merry Christmas—A glad New Year;
“God Bless Us, Every One.”
—A. MERRIAM CONNER.
L A. DEMOCRATIC
LEADER BLASTS
OLSON. BRIDGES
WASHINGTON, -Dec. 18. — The
Los Angeles Times special Washington correspondent reports that a
blistering attack upon Governor Olson, Harry Bridges, C. I. O. labor
agitator, and “the radical element”
in California was delivered today by
Zach Lamar Cobb, Los Angeles attorney and Democratic leader, before leaving Washington for the
West Coast.
The recent defeat of the Ham and
Eggs plan by the voters of California was “of far greater significance
than is generally realized,” Cobb declared in a statement to the press.
Terming the scheme “unworkable”
Cobb said that it had been seized upon and supported by “radical followers’ of Harry Bridges in an effort
to “use innocent people to extend
his power for evil.”
He declared that Bridges had exhausted the patience of San Francisco residents and had harassed the
West Coast farmers “beyond _reasonable endurance.”” The overwhelming defeat of the $30-Every-Thursday plan was directly attributable to
distaste for Bridges and his ‘‘communistic associates,’’ Cobb said.
Foreshadowing a possible conservative twist in the 1940 Democratic
campaign, Cobb also criticized plans
of Governor Olson.to increase taxes
for the purpose of setting up an operating structure for his production
for use program,
“The proposed tax increases would
be wasted on the governor’s unworkable and fantastic production for use
scheme,” Cobb said. ‘The burden of
these wasted taxes would fall on the
farmers, on business, big and little,
and on the working people of all
classes, all of whom are already ovértaxed.” ,
Cobb referred to the “Olson-Bridges alliance’ and’ predicted that
California Democrats will combine
to smash the asserted combine and
“free California from the constantly
. jrecurring menace of “destructive
