NON-SWIMMERS WILL
BECOME LIFE SAVERS
BERKELEY, Dec. 18.—A course
designed to make lifesavers out of
those who do not swim, and perhaps
never ‘will, as well as those who do,
has been inaugurated by the University of California as part of a
greatly enlarged program covering
the aquatic life-saving phases of the
physical education. Students in the
course are told how to make impromptu life-savers out of spectators
and others without specific training .
as well as being thoroughly drilled
in-all of the orthodox procedures of
both life-saving and accident prevention in or near the water.
The enlarged program is in keeping with a similar program of the
American Red Cross a,nd_ students

summer. Interested spectators and
non-swimming attendants will be
shown how they might be able to
Save a life by using a coat or shirt as
a drag or life-line for the drowning
person. They. will also be told how to
right a small boat if it overturns in
deep water, and will be advised of
other features of life-saving which
they might employ in the absence of
a qualified life-saver.
In addition to the usual swimming
life-saving practices, students in the
course are taught how to handle the
small craft and surf boards when the
saving of a life is involved, and also
how to handle drowning persons: in
currents, rip tides and undertows.
They are advised that the handling
of an actual drowning person. and a
hysterical person who is not drowning calls for two entirely separate
techniques.
The course is under the direction
of George Hughling, junior supervis
or in physical education and specialist in swimming, who says that
who pass their tests suéeciate fey are .
tificates. Thus far 85 students out ot .
a total of 125 have qualified for such .
