AGRICULTURE
If you'll g’ance over toward the
right, and squint your eyes just a
bit, you may find yourself’ transported (back to the California of the
days before the arrival of the Padres.
(Now, remaining where you are,
just turn your head slightly and look
to the extreme left. You’ll probably
agree that you never saw a better.

Over on the other side? The why
and the wherefores—treated so realistically that you actually went to
speak to the figures—of the remarkable promotional progress and. the
great mantle jof inspection ~safety
thrown around California farms, by
the State Department of Agriculture.
The foregoing may be a sample of
something you will hear when you
enter the vast Hall of Agriculture ‘on
, Treasure Island next February. Under the sponsorship of the California
State Commission, a tour of the Hall,
astonishing exhibits! and of other
now actively under construction was
/made this week, Exposition wise observers agreed that superlatives may
/ properly be used for the display we
are about to examine:
Visualize a circular setting 100
feet in length by 15 feet in depth or
. width. On this stage, accurately reproduced with modeled figures and
in natural colors are the settings for
California agriculture from before
1769 to and including 1939. Yes,

The major phases in the agricultural development of the state: (1)
(2) the introduction of agricultural instruction
by the Padres; (3) the Spanish period; (4) Fort Sutter of the ’49 era;
(5) the fabulous gold rush days;
(6) the coming of the railways and
the resultant astounding development; (7) the present era, with machinery mastering the soil,
“The cradle of agriqulture in California’’——the grounds of ‘the San
Gabriel Mission—will be shown in
detail. The first planting of orange
trees in the front of the mission and
the dlose identity of the San Gabriel
Mission with the great stock raising
industry of the state, are being vivid.
entary principles of agriculture to
the Indians the ‘Padres laid the
foundation for the great work now
being carried! on by the’ California
State Department of Agriculture.
The awakening of the gold miners
to the fact that men had to eat and
that food must be produced are being illustrated in an indelible manly depicted. In teaching the rudimner.
“Old Huntington No. 1’? — also
known as the C. P. Huntington—
pioneer locomotive of the Central
Pacific railroad and beloved by California historians, is being groomed
through the medium of a model exeeedingly realistic—on a track. before a typical station tank town of
the 60’s. :
Yes, school children, farmers,
business men and educators will have
an entirely new conception of the
problems which California agriculture has solved when they Visit this
astonishing exhibition — now well
. along toward completion — in the
Hall of Agriculture on Treasure Is. land next year.
Let’s return to our other diorama
. also 100 feet long and 15 feet in
. depth—on the opposite side of the
. display:
Here we see the :practical working of the efficient Inspection Division of the, State Department of
Agriculture. Giving the plan a quick
once-over, we note the following
highlights:
The protection and the promotion
of the agricultural interests of the
state’ are the principal functions of
the State Department of Agriculture
and so in a vivid ‘manner the practical workings of these departments
are shown:
(1) Inspection of packing houses,
warehouses, seed, hay, grain, public
seales, nursery services and other
vital commodities and fields; (2)
Entomology: Boiled down to a few
words, the work of this bureau insures oranges amd aipples, grapes
and prunes, and the wide assortment
of famed California fruits for you
and for me—and for world millions.
Insect eradication and control are of
paramount importance, as you will
agree after you inspect this astonishing exhibit; (8) Inspection of cattle,
meat and milk, and cattle quarantine.
We might go on, but these are the
high spots and you’ll see all this and
a lot more next February.
Charles H. Purcell, executive officer of the California State Commission, in his. current report states
that definite work on exhibits—the
courts and interiors—is now well under way in: Alameda-Contra Costa
building; Mission Trails building;
Shasta-Cascade building; Natural
Resources, in the State building. Possibly to be bracketed with the Department of Agriculture~~ display
which we have covered, from the
standpoint of activity—is the epochal scientific exhibit now being built
by the University of California in the
Palace of Science.
Lacey Jones, University of California student, has returned to spend
the holdiays with his mother in Nevada City. '
CHORAL PRACTICE
The high school choruses are hard
at work to make their formal dance
a success. They met Thursday night
to practice marching a processional.
The students were given tickets on
Friday and everyone is doing his
part. With the help and cooperation
of the townspeople the dance will be
a success. :
