AUGUST 30. 1889. —_—_—_—_—_—_—_——— Naming Pioneer Towns: The Sacramento Themis gives the followirg relative to the neming of pioneer Nevada county towns in addition to ‘the instances heretofore referred to: The locality of Little York® was settled in early days largely by miners from New York and the Middle States Afterw rds : numbers came from Missouri and‘the West.. An election was held to determine the name of the district and the Eastern men outvoted those from the West, and adopted the name of Little York over St, the choice of tlie mingrity. North San Juan acquired i.s name from this circumstance: In 1853, a miner, named Kentz, who bad accompanied General Scott when his expediLouis, ‘ed in mining near the present site of the town. One evening he war jmpressed with the fancied yosemblance of a bluff hill near by *o the castle of San Juan 'e Ullo»,, which guards the entrance to the port of Vera Cruz. He exryessed his opinion; and the Afterwards that name was applied to the town. In 1857, when an application was made for a postoffice to be established there, the authorities at Wasl? ington required a new name for the place, as an_ office had already been established at another town of that title in Monterey county. The citizens thereupon added the* prefix ‘‘North” to the name. —~~2 ee Hotel Arrivals. Natronat Excuance, August 28=H, A. Aldrich, M. R. Casey, Wm. H. wobnson, Sacramento; Mrs. J. Golfett, A. In one of the dingy Chinese shanties chess-playing is a favorite game, and considerable money changes hands over the table. The place is fitted -up handsomely for a Chinaman’s quarters, and the chess table isa rare bit of Chinese carving and painting. : The Chinese game of chess is very ancient, for Wu. Wang invented itin 1120 B. C., bit its rules of playing are very different from those.used by Western nations. In the play-room a large table is erected, the surface of which is divided into seventy-two squares, of which eight are run together to form a river, leaving thirtytwo on each side; but as the mén stand on the intersection of the lines there are ninety positions for the sixteen }/-pieces used by-eath player, or twenty= six more than is used in the Europeangame. The pieces are like checker men in shape, each of the seven kinds on. each side having its name cuton top, and distinguished by red or black colors. The four squares near each edge form the headquarters “General,” out of which he and his two sz, or ‘‘secretaries,”’ can not move. On each side of the headquarters are two elephants, two horses and two chariots, whose powers are less than those of our bishop, knight and castle, though simar. The chariot is the most powerful piece. In frontofthe horses stand two cannoneers, which capture like our knights, but move like our castles. Five poo, soldiers or pawns, guard the, river banks, but.can not return when once across it in pursuit of the enemy, and getno higher value when they reach the last row. Each piece is put down in the point where it captures its man, except the cannoneers. As the General can not be taken, the object of each player is to checkmate him in his headquarters .by preventing ‘him from moving except in check. The want of a Queen and the limited moves ofthe men restrict the combination in the Chinese game more than in the Western chess, but it has its own eleThe Chinamen in Mott which the papers did notreport. Some of the players have attained an amount of sxill that would put an American on his mettle to defeat. For more than seven centuries chess has been a great game with the Chinese, and it is held in great respect in China and Higgins Celebrated the Discovery o * “Jee Whillikens! What's that?” Higgins made a dive for something in the mud at his feet, fished it out between his thumb and finger, and slapped his thigh joyfully as he said: “A five-dollar gold piece, sure as guns! First money I ever found in my TPl-have me a new hat out of that, and take the babies home some A moment later he met two friends, “Ha, Smythe, how are you? How're you, Haley? S’posing we step into Archie Flynn’s place and take something. I’ve just found five dollars and I'll set em up on the strength of it.” _ What he “set up” cost eighty dents, and ten minutes later he met three of the “‘boys” from the office and generously ‘‘set up” ‘‘cigars all ’round.”’ “Then he tossed twenty-five cents to a blind beggar and gave the office boy * He wrote a letter to his married sister that morning, to which was the “I. picked up five dollars on the street to-day, and inclose two of it, with which you may get the children “Guess I'll go down to the Parker House and get my dinner to-day instead of to the lunch-counter ’round the corner,” he said at noon; “I. can Then he paid adollar and a hal? for anew straw hat, spent a dollar for toys for the children and another dol“‘By Jove!” he said, as he was passing a theater, “my wife’s been wanting allthe week to go and see Lotta and I said we couldn't afford it, but hanged if we can’t when a fellow picks five-dollar gold pieces up out of A day or two later Higgins found rather sober amusement in covering a sheet of paper with’ the following “Things bought with five dollars I found Wednesday—Hat, dollar and a half; theater tickets, two dollars; citwo dollars; dinner at Parker’s, dollar strawberries, fifty cents; neckties, dolhalf; total sixteen dollars and ninety: . EMMELINE CRAIGIN, MRS. , (LATE OF BOSTON,) OUR BREAD IN DANGER, The United States Government Chemists, in their examinations of articles of food offered for Government use, have developed the fact that almost all the baking ‘powders upon the market are made from alum or phos‘phates, or contain large quantities of lime or other adulterants. As a matter of fact, of the samples analyzed, the Royal was the only baking powder found free from all of these deleterious ingredients, and absolutely pure. Alum is used as a substitute for cream of tartar to produce a cheap baking powder. The effect of alum upon the system has been ascertained to be poisonous, and overdoses have been attended with fatal results. The phosphate are next to the alum powders in cheapness. They contain a large amount of lime. The baking powders sold with a gift are o: the alum or phosphate class. _ Lime when subjected to heat gives off a certain atnount ot carbonic acid gas, but a quicklime is left, one of the most powerful caustics known. Chemists have found twelve per cent., or one-eighth of the weight, of some of the baking powders advertised as pure to be lime.
