The San Mateo man, formerly of, Nevada City and Grass Valley, purchased the storied. and beautiful Killarney Lakes and turned them over, with their grotesque crags and emerald shores, to the Irish Free State. {It was a gift to make the Commentators of the world say kindly things of a California. ~ Bourne made the gift in the name of Maude Chase Bourne Vincent, deceased daughter of the Bournes and wife of Arthur Vincent, who is now a Senator in the Irish Free State and who, with his wife,, spent numerous vacations at the lakes. Bourne’s family moved to this region when in 1869 his father, William H. Bourne Sr., arrived from the East to operate some of the gold mines here. At different times he owned or controlled the Empire, N. Star, Pittsburg and other properties. When he died in 1878 his financial affairs were found to bevin a rather chaotic state. It was William Bowers Bourne, the son, who left Oxford University to come to this district to salvage the estate. He found the old heads among the experienced miners of the opinion that the Empire was worked out, but he disregarded their advice.
