Thinking
Out Loud
By H. M. L.
Christmas, its significance’ and
all those rites attending its observance this year, should have a:
special importance to people of the
United States this year. We are
upborne on tne wings of a new
prosperity, a prosperity that is
due to wars in Europe and in Asia.
The United States, unhappily: is
the arsenal and the treasury of the
oppressed and those who are victims of transgression. We’ say unhappily in its material asuects, for
it is founded in the material ruin
of friendly peoples who in other
years have sung. Yuletide MHosannahs with us.
We are a polyglot people. Our
ancestors are English, French, German, Norse, and a dozen other nationalities and races: Each one of
these integral parts of our nation
has enriched the common bloodstream. The folk lore, the music,
the art, the ways of our living are
derived from many sources leaving
us debtors in perpetuity to all that
is fine and ennobling among earth’s
children. As such debtors we should
be the first to seek the causes of
world dissention, and to assume
that leadership which we believe
will be universally accorded us, to
establish a just peace when this
war ends, a peace in which all_nations. shall be permitted to work
and live according to principles
in international relations which
govern in our own republic.
We suggest that we think about
the peace that shall follow this
war, now, so that when the war
ends we shall have some firm convictions about what the peace shall
be. We should do it now before
our own blood has been spilt in the
cause of democracy and before our
judgment of the ultimate good has
been clouded by the immediate evil.
Of one thing we have become
convinced, convinced against our
will. We believe the primary cause
of wars is the monopolization of
material& by groups or by nations.
Tarriff barriers have protected a
way of living, a priviliged way of
living among a few groups within
a few nations which have resulted
in high standards for a relative
few and low standards for the relative many.
Weibelieve that the fruits of the
earth -and its resources should be
made available to all peoples on
equal terms. Until this is done we
shall have wars for conquest, There
will always be the “‘haves’’, and the
“have nots’’. The latter will fight
rather than pay the tribute the
“haves’’ impose on taw materials,
even though fighting costs more
than the duties imposed.
We are well aware that this is
heresy to Conservative Democrats
and Republicans. We have by import tariffs fostered in the United
States a standard of ‘living far superior to that of any other nation.
We. are not convinced at this momen that we need altruistically to
surrender this standard, but we are
convinced that if we desire universal peace we must take steps to
raise the standard of living in other
nations by making raw materials
as free to foreign nations as they
are to us. Food is a-raw material
and we submit asa matter of justice that that certainly should be
available to all peoples of earth on
equal terms. Some parts of the
globe are richer than others in
those things necessary to human
cence of the creator rather than to
the virtue of the people who happen to dwell in the particular region,
The discontent from which wars
arise is due, in the last analysis, to

Trinity Celebrates

THE STAR ABOVE
The pathways of life are shadowed ,
But a star is shining through
And the Yulteide Spirit is ‘singing
A song that is brave and true;
A, song of love and beauty,
Which the children delight to sing,
When the Christmas trees are lighted
And the bells of Christmas ring.
Yes, many paths are darkened,
As we hail the Holy Night
With music and kindly greetings
And brightly gleaming lights; .
And our hearts are touched by the sorrows
Of those in lands afar,
Who, is secret wait for the message
And the promise of one fair star.
May we send this Yuletide message
To those whose lives are drear,
Light is stronger than darkness
And courage is greater than fear;
And the world is struggling upward
Toward the heights it will surely win,
Leaving behind its burdens
Of hatred and sorrow and sin.
These are the dreams we cherish
And this is the faith we hold,
As we listen with hearts enraptured
To the beautiful story of old;
May those who are now in bondage
Look up through their bitter tears,
And keep with courage undaunted
Their tryst with the coming years.
Peace to the stricken nations,
Peace to the land we love,
With the Spirit of Yuletide to guide us
And the star of hope above.
