SACRAMENTO, Dec. 24.—The sum eof $105.000 was authorized this week by the State Reclamation Board for immediate construction on the Sacramento river flood contrdél ‘system. A federal grant will match the state’s appropriation, bringing _ the work total’to $210.000. The project will include levee work on the Bear river system, on the east and west levees of the Yolo by-pass, on the east levee of the Sacramento fiver above Colusa and on the Feather river levee at Marysville. The work is to be done under the California Debris Commission. The war department has announced it will spend $69,000 at once to repair Sac-‘Tamento river levees damaged by the floods in the last ten days. The first definite step 4oward the actual construction of Shasta Dam, key unit in the Central Valleys project, is scheduled to be taken in March, 1938, when a call for bids for the erection of the gigantic dam “ © Fhe announcement, the first in@ication yet given as to the opening of work on the undertaking, was made last week by Walker Young of ‘Sacramento, engineer in charge of Central Valleys, in an address before the convention of the Associated General Contractors of Northern California in San Francisco. Prediction that the California State Fair, in five years, will be the fargest in the United States, both in attendance and in agricultural facdlities, was made in a report by Raymond A. The wooden bleachers, familiar to the race track since 1909, and other old landmarks on the California state fair grounds, are rapidly being removed to make way for the exttnsive improvement program to be started soon after January 1. As soon as the land is cleared away, an administration bfilding. the dairy products building, and two other buildings for the Future Farmers of America and the 4-H Club will rise. The entire project is expected to be completed for the 1938 fair. CHANGES MADE IN CCC CAMPS A forced temporary cessation of CCC. activities ‘in the Downieville flood area has been announced by DeWitt Nelson, forest supervisor at Nevada City. Unfortunately, Nelson says, at the time of the flood, army orders had already been issued involving extensive movements of enrollees from camp to camp due to the reduction in the number of camps and the consequent closing of some in the California region. The entire company at Grass Valley was to have been moved to Fouts Creek on the Mendocino forest, and the company now at Snowline on the Eldorado forest moved to Grass_ Valley. Thnrough special arrangement with the district commander’s office at Sacramento, Nelson was able to assign 34 enrollees to Downieville, but they were moved out Sunday and Nelson figures that it will probably be about December 27 before they can be replaced. Nelson figures that during the time the enrollees have been at Downieville they have made some real relieving the flood. Main street, running past the hotel was cleared, as was Opal street past the Masonic Temple and around the temple, and also Lusk street. The street paralleling the Fiver on the south side was cleared, and a foot trail cleared across the bridge. The city water system was repaired above Ponta’s hotel, and ditches were dug and lines laid to two dwellings containing children. The Peckwith system was repaired and hooked onto a new creek and dug to bed rock, 150 feet of new flume box being built. Nelson states that enrollees will be assigned to the flood area again just as soon as possible. One fortunate coincidence was that the forest service building at the new Downieville ranger station site had just been fitted.up for stwbh camp purposes in connection.,,.with the proposed Downieville-Camptonville telephone line, dnd so the enrollees assigned to the flood area could be quartered comfortably.
