MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1945 NEVADA = eet
traction imiproved, Palmer said.
As the situation now stands, little
no prospecting will be done to
find radioactive substances, sinee the
bill provides that any ores containing thorium, and elements
higher than uranium in atomic
weight shall be retained to the United States government.
In addition the order proposed by
Secretary Harold Ickes provides that
minerals with any radioactive content will henceorth be withdrawn
from private ownership, Palmer
pointed out.
RADIOACTIVE
ORES IN NEVADA
Work on numerous deposits. of
radioactive minerals scattered over
the deserts and mountains of Nevada will be definitely retarded if
the bill dealing with the development and control of atomic energy
now before the national senate becomes a law, in the opinion of Walter S. Palmer, head of the University
of Nevada department of metallurgy
and director of the state analytical
laboratory.
Although most of these deposits
contain only slight percentages of
the valuable ingredients of atomic
energy, the materials found in Nevada might well become extremely
important-if need for the substances
fbecome desperate or methods of exor
uranium,
This control will effectively stifle
any further search for the minerals,
and will result in the prospector’s
keeping silent with regard to any
‘known deposits.
Palmer favors a control such as is
now maintained on gold ores by the
government with government purchases of the materials to encourage
further development in this field.

Some of the strongest radioactive
mineral showing in Nevada are
found near Denio, Ashdown and
Round. Mountain, Palmer said. These
areas are known to contain uranium
oxide minerals,
ibenite.
Radioactive materials are
extracted from the Ashdown
tound Mountain deposits, and although no great quantity has been
discovered, the ease of recovery may
yet cause these locations
valuable:
South of Palisades, ~ radioactive

the Ruby Mountain in Elko. County
and the McGill and Manhattan areas
have yielded small quantities.

Radioactive ores and minerals are
most frequently found in Nevada in
pegmatite veins, in granite type rock
and in opal materials.

To each of us the word Christmas
summons many happy memories. To
some it recalls a ride over the frozen
countryside to grandma’s, sleighbells tinkling all the while. To others
at recalls happy reunions in mirthfilled living rooms, gay banquets and
glowing Christmas trees. But to all
it recalls days of charm and endearment, the happiest days of our lives.
