NEVADA CITY NUGGET.
~_ JEFF CASSERLY
TELLS STORY OF
11 LB, NUGGET
In the current issue of the California Mining Journal, Jeff Casserly tells his own story of his receni
finding of a nugget weighing eleven
@
pounds:
“Modesty prevents me from crowding myself before the public but
whenever I get too old to dream of
golden nuggets, call the coroner.
That eleven pound nugget bobs up
again and gets bigger and. bigger
every day. It soon will be one hundred and eleven pounds, maybe. As it
appears to be of some interest to
the mining fraternity and to the public also, perhaps a short story of the
find may be acceptable. I just stumbled on to it and it took four men to
pack it out of the canyon up to the
highway and had to get a wheelbarrow to wheel it into Nevada City.
Nobody could handle it, said it was
too much at one time so returned it,
so then I had to saw it in two and 1
sawed it and sold the sawdust for
$1000 cash. Not so bad for one nugget.
“T guess a great many people think
that I am lucky, and they run away
with ‘the idea that I don’t have to
work for what I get. Let them try
it. They haven’t the will, ambition,
desire. or energy to roam the hills,
mountains, ravines and valleys year
after year, all alone and go through
all kinds of privations, such as laying down among the rattle snakes
with only the blue sky for the 'covering. Let me tell you one thing,
you don’t find these nuggets around
road houses, beer-joints or beauty
parlors. Oh no you don’t.”
“T follow the rich placers which
have been worked in early days and
being a: close observer, I keep on the
lookout for strays, over looked by
the pioneers. I do not consider this
nugget of extraordinary importance.
I have been finding nuggets all my
life, beginning in Sierra county 50
years ago, and-believe me they don't
pop up out of the ground like mushrooms when they see me coming and
say, ‘Here I am and take me homee,’
I found a gold-silver nugget north
of Patkard, Nevada, which . netted
me-several thousand dollars and one
east of Manhattan, Nevada, that netted me about the same value, and
one in Mexico near a place discribCOUNTY HOSPITAL ANNEX
[Tifteen men started excavating
for the new addition at the county
hospital Thursday,; morning. The
new wing will be two: story and the
same dimensions as the other two
buildings. The Nevada County hospital has been overcrowded for sonie
time and the new quarters will greatly relieve this condition.
ed by Arthur Brisbane in the Examiner.
“All you have to do is go out and
look for them.-I: don’t know how
long to hold one to this gem. It looks
like I will have to apply to the governor for a detachment of marines
to. guard it. So far, about nine
thousand have tried to get’ their
claws on it( the way they expressed
it). One enterprising lout stole it out
of the automobile while I was lighting a cigarette. When captured he
said he wished to make his girl
friend a stick-pin for Christmas. T
have had innumerable offers of grub
stakes and partnerships, but I prefer to be alone and an independent
operator. Several] large pieces of gold
have been found near around the
surface at different times. BB.
Lewis found one of ten pounds on
the hillside of the Docile Mine at Alleghany in 1867. Frank Labadie
picked up one under a manzanita
bush near Dobbins, value about $800
and Porphry Smith found a gem in
French Ravine, Alleghany, after the
ravine had been worked out. My next
field of operation.will be “along the
rich ravines of Nevada and Sierra
counties, when nothing less than a
tractor will be able to haul my next
nugget into town. I have done some
scouting and prelfminary work along
the Pike Bell trail about 10 years
ago and had a lay on the Lost Emigrant. Mine, two and a half miles
north of Auburn. It took Bell to find
big nuggets at or near the top of the
ground. The story told me was, that
when a hole got too deep that he
couldn’t shovel out of it he dragged
his freight to other parts. Here is
where he over looked a bet. Like the
Dutchman he should have run two
feet further.
“TI consider Nevada. and Sierra
counties "the land of golden opportunities and pray that it will be my
good fortune to wander again along
the golden sands of Pactolus of those
counties and prolong my _ sojourn
among the sunny climes. blossoms
and gold.”

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 23.—Existence of sylvatic plague or Bacillus

California, has occasioned a suggestion by the Medical School of the
