ONE STEP FORWARD
te
Next Spring there will be a great splashing in*the. new
municipal. swimming. pool in:the.park which thecity fathers . .
have just purchased, Ten acres of the very best bit of mountain scenery original timber, native shrubs and boulder strewn
stream, have been acquired for the city’s very own to have and
to hold as long as Nevada City exists.
Our boys and girls will no longer find it: necessary to
trek miles for a good swim in unsafe waters. Picnickers will
find one of the most lovely spots in the mountains in which to
spread their cloths and viands. 0
This a step forward. Three times at the polls the people
ef this city resolutely voted for the swimming pool, the last
time, despite the fact that they were offered a reduction of 30
cents per hundred in their tax rate. .
The next step forward-should-be a new grammar school
buildingand a gymnasium-auditorium for the high school.
_ The other day, discussing the subject, we referred to the
number of school children in the high and grammar schools
as “more than 500." As a matter of fact there are nearly 600
children in the two schools. ‘ Fhe younger:children, in the
grammar schools need a safe, sanitary:.and modern school
building. If anyone doubts this vital need, let them ask any
member of the school board. The high school students, in
order to be as well equipped as 99 per cent of the high school
children throughout California, should have a gymnasium aud“ytorium.
Since the progressive citizens of Nevada City, have turned down a proposal to save taxes in: order to provide their
children with a swimming pool, who shall say that they would
refuse a bond issue to improve their: schools >

SMALL PROFIT
IN SMALL GOLD
After several queries in regard to
a recent letter signed the ‘‘Small
j Gold Miner’ that appeared in the
Nevada City Nugget a few days ago,
1a Nugget reporter has been given a
specific instance as an example. A
shipment of 8.98 ounces of gold was
purchased over the period of a week
andthe -prices ranged from $25,00
to $26.00 according to how clean the
gold dust and nuggets were. When
the gold buyers gold was melted at
the mint there was i loss of over one
half ounce or-between $12.00 and
$13.00 on the shipment.
He was sent a check for $251.24
and after deducting the insurance
and shipping charges of $1.24 he had
$250.00 clear. This 8.98 ounces
“prought him $250, or $27.83 an
‘ounce clear. On that shipment he
cleared from $2.83 'lto $1.83 an ounce
! but from this le also had to pay his
office -rent, license fee and other
overhead expense.
Gold buyers that. have small gro.cery stores and take the gold dust
and’ nuggets in trade, this buyer
states, can afford to pay a higher
ipricé as they also make a profit on
their grocery sales.
One sniper, who had been selling
to a gold buyer, made a shipment of
three ounces to the mint and realiz'ed about $27.00 an ounce. He is
now selling to the gold -buyer at
$25.00 and $26.00 an ounce, as he
i realizes the gold buyer is paying hin
nearly as much as he received at the
mint with no waiting and no shipp-;
ing expense.

Last Friday night Lincoln
i 25 to 19,. Nevada City showed -up
.
. well against. the larger and more
experienced Lincoln boys. The game
was the most exciting Nevada City
has played ths season. The Yellowjackets kept nip and tuck with the
Lincoln boys until the last quarter.
The starting line up for Nevada
City was: Steger and Pierce, forwards; Celio, center; and Browning
and Tamblyn, guards.
Roznski were sent in as ‘substitutes.
Celio was taken out of the game for
four personal fouls.
In the B game, the Yellowjackets
were swatted 50 to 8, the much larger and trickier Lincoln: boys completely bewildered. the Yellowjackets. The line up was: Bill Polkinghorn and Harold Lopez as forwards;
Don Jones as center and Ray Steger
and Dick: Stevens as guards, and Elliot, Doolittle and Thomas, substi‘tutes. Doolittle played the outstanding game of the evening, sinking two: shots from the middle of
