Nineteen forty six is coming into life—365 clean pages ‘on which to continue the diary of humanity. Never has loomed a new year more serious in its challenge and at the same time more full of promise for the world. ‘On the serious side the rebuilding of hope and confidence and faith over the planet is fully as herculean a task as the rebuilding of blighted cities and restoration to health of privation stricken peoples. On the side of hope, we see a symbol wherever we go—the American eagle. He is not pouncing upon a foe the traditional arrows in his talons. He is weaponless, his wings are widespread, as if he were alighting at home after long and far flight. He is the eagle you see upon the discharge pin_in the lapel of thousands of young Americans in new civilian clothes. It is the symbol that youth has come*back to America— that eagle on slim, strong shoulders under young faces that so largely disappared in a war time homeland of oldsters and children. In that youth is the hope of this nation and of a world that looks to this nation for its hope. The courage of the middle aged and the old has worn thinner in war. But the youth that conquered a world of enemies, and looked death in the face still walks unafraid into the future, The years ahead may be thorny, but there is no pls! forfear. The horrors of war for the present are behind us. The eagle of American youth is flying home. Providence has granted to all America the happiest new year ever.—Coniribute. tie. . «. WELCOME 1946 In spite of all anxieties, confusions and problems currently pending, northern and central California can greet the new year with a hearty and hopeful welcome. , Our first peace time new year’s day since 1941 finds us still the economic bright spot of the nation, still forging ahead to a prosperous future. Regardless of whether this region is selected as the world capital, 1946 is going to be a big year for us. : In San Francisco airport development, city planning and a huge industrial building program are indications of a forward looking spirit which evidences a.true municipal renascence. And whatever benefits San Francisco is inevitably reflected on its neighboring communities. Indeed not the least of the reasons for greeting 1946 with hope and confidence is the solid foundation of good will and cooperation established between San Francisco and the rest of northern and central California. Together we can lick problems and really gét somewhere--Lcet’s~-go-These Are Weterans RETRAINING FOR LIFE—The Veterans’ Administration, backed by the dollars from the Victory Loan, will give retraining to thousands of disabl similar to these two mere boys shown at George Washington Univers ington, D.
