Dear Mrs. Willoughby:—— “
Regarding the establishment of
these labor cAmps within our. State
savors too much of slavery and the
thing is unconstitutional. The Thir-,

crime whereof

subject to their jurisdiction.”
Is it a crime to be broke and without a job? These labor camps say
work 6r no feed or lodging. If that
isn’t involuntary ' servitude what do
you call it?
Furthermore there is no law of
the land that states that any organization of the government or state
can be so jockeyed that men‘ within
that organization receiving a bountiful wage or salary from the federal
government can be relieved of their
duties and men substituted without
pay to ‘perform these labors.
We have in our

most expensive institutions of ou:

inefficient. It is safe to say thar

UNEMPLOYED — 1
In another column will’ be found a letter from one of;
our readers relating ot the highway camps established by the .
state to aid in the unemployment problem. Everyone has a.
right to their own opinion but we surely differ with our .
reader. The United States is facing a crisis never before’
egualed ih our history. Drastic methods must be taken, and
the ultimate results must be carefully weighed. Charity is,
degrading and is avoided whenever possible. In working for .
their board and lodging these men are dble to keep their self.
sespect. They are not slaves in any sense. They are nétforced ;
to work but are in most cases glad to do so. The City of San
Francisco recruited 400 men who were glad to work for their
board and lodging.
TAXES! TAXES! TAXES!
Those who have not paid for their taxes are frantically
gathering the money to do so before they become delinquent
on Monday.
Taxes are one of the evil (>) necessities of an efficient
government but it is hard to remind oneself of the fact when
tax time rolls around.
PLENTY OF SNOW—PLENTY OF WATER
All indications are for a heavy fall of snow this winter
which has begun early. While we all complain of the bitter
cold we rejoice that it insures plenty of water for next summer. .
that—in the neighborhood of $59,909.00. This will go to Forest Supervisors. istant Supervisors, Ju. nior Foresters, Inspectors, Rangers,

they are asking these unfortua nice fat pay check

of thege people. Why not ask the
carriers of Uncle Sam’s mail to-sit by
and let these men do the work for
lodging and board. Why not ask the
Highway Patrol of the State to turn
over their -motor¢ycles and they sit
by while the ‘‘volunteers”’ do the job
for lodging and board. Or take any
other branches~ of Federal or State
work and let the ones drawing the
nice fat salaries sit by and have-the
“volunteers” do the work for lodging and board.
As newspaper men it seems to me
that
is take issue with this unamerican
method of doing business which savors too much of Feudal times, ask
for this $50,000.00 that is distributed monthly to Forest employees who
do nothing these winter months to
earn even a portion of their salaries
