No one wants to do an injustice to the trucking companies, whether large or individual in character. But the highways primarily were built for the use of that portion of the public which does not utilize the same for the purpose of private profit. The motorists also are in the vast majority. time will come when the principle of the “g the greatest number’’ will have to be applied to the highways. Vierling Kersey, state superintendent of publie instruction, that courses in traffic safety and safe driving will shortly be added to the school curriculum. Plans are now being worked out with E. Raymond Cato, chief of the California Highway Patrol, to train a svecial staff of state traffic officers who will assist in inaugurating the new safety courses, Kersey said. Superintendent Kersey’s statement follows: rhe gravity of oir traffic accident problem can no longer be ignored, nor ignore their responsibility in meeting the problem, “Thousands of our young men and women are being killed or permanently crippled in the reckless slaughter on our streets and highways before they have even reached adult years. “It is a shocking but factual statement that one out of every three children in California is destined to be killed or injured in a motor vehicle accident before the end of his span—unless drastic ac: tion is taken to reduce the present normal life accident ratio! “Speeding and tremendous increase in busses on our highways, been serious factors traffie casualties. “Adding to the significance of the problem from the standpoint of pubis the fact that the lic education ean the public schools recklessness, together with drunken driving and a trucks and have all in adding to most dangerous age for drivers is from 16 to 19, according to recént studies of motor vehicle accident records. “The State Department of Education hopes to render valuable assistance in the campaign of safety education which has been undertaken, by the California Safety Council and the many local safety committees. “In cooperation with E. Raymona Cato, chief of the California High‘way Patrol, we have been working for some time on a program of special training for state traffic officers who will direct the inauguration of safety courses in the high schools. It is also hoped that this program, in modified form, can be extended to the grade schools, as we are convinced that proper habits of safe driying and a recognition of riiles of the road, gained in youth, will have a tremendous effect in promoting: Safety and curbing reckless driving. “The special staff of traffic officers, when they have been trained as instructors, will, in turn, assist in training teachers in the schools who will then take over the work in safety instruction. They will also aid in the development of special taxtbook material dealing with traffic regulations and rules of safe driying.
