GRASS VALLEY LAUNDRY AND DRY CLEANERS Phone 108 111 BENNETT STREET GRASS VALLEY U.S. AND CANADA ~ SOME DAY WILL UNITE, FORECAST LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7.—The United States and Canada are moving toward an eventual union, believes Dr. George McBride, professor of geography on the Los Angeles campus of the University of California. Economic, cultural, and geographical forces will some day result in political union, the professor says, though he makes no prediction of the length of time necessary for its accomplishment. “A union between the United States and Canada will come about, not through imperialistic ‘expansion on the part of either country, but by a simple process of growing together,’’ Dr. McBride declares. He points out.that the populations of Canada and the United States live side by side, since Canadian populaation is concentrated on her southern border. There is considerable interchange in population; for more ‘han 1,200,000 people of Canadian hirth live in the United States, and there are more than 340,000 United States born inhabitants in Canada. Dr. McBride also calls attention to the strong economic ties which link the countries. It was the development of this new cyclotron which brought the. Nobe Prize in Physics to Dr. Ernest Orlando Lawrence of Berkeley a few: weeks ago. : Actually, two cyclotrons now fig4 ure in this picture of scientific pro-. gress. One is known as the old 37-. inch cyclotron, an 85-ton affair, having its place in a barn like campne! building, in which the neutron ray was first developed and the first clinical tests made. Enough happened in these tests to justify the build-! ing of the new cyclotron—the 60-. inch cyclotron, as it is called, with a neutron intensity ten times that of the old, This new engine now is housed in its own laboratory at the head of the campus enclosure. j The Washington announcement! was occasioned by the fact that Dr. Lawrence, together with his medical colleagues, was reporting the first clinical work with. the new cyclo-' tron to Dr. Lugvig Hektoen, director of the National Advisory Cancer. Council, which has been at the forefront with financial and technical assistance for the Berkeley physicist. !
