NUGGET
CHIEF JACKSON ASKS
CAUTIOUS DRIVING
IN HOLIDAY SEASON:
An appeal for caution by
motorists to help cut the December traffic toll was coupled today
by J. J. Jackson, Chief of Police,
with announcement that forces
of law enforcement will be alert
to make Nevada City streets as
‘safe as, possible for pedestrian
and driver.
‘ Jackson pointed out the National Safety Council figures
show last December’s traffie accident toll, on a nationwide basis
was 150 deaths greater than October’s, the second most deadly
month, and 430 deaths greater
than July’s, the month of heaviest highway traffic: in terms of
miles driven.
“A lot. of factors enter into a
traffic accident,” said .Jackson,
“but December’s unnatural death
record is significant in that it coincides with the weather, wet and
slippery streets and the obscuring of drivers’ vision because of
rain, fog and clouded wind
shields, fx
» “It is the belief of the traffic
division that the physical, factors
found in winter driving tends to
make it doubly dangerous for the
driver who refuses to acknowledge the need for greater caution, less speed ard more defensive driving:
“While a lucky driver may get
away with all sirts of reckless
and unthinking driving during
the rest of the year, the physical
factors present in winter driving
are. frequently the stumbling
blocks which spell his downfall.”
Jackson issued the following
rules for driving during the
Christmas shopping rush and the
holiday season:
Double your caution. Drive as
though the unexpected will happen.
Lower your speed. This is
necessary in view of the dangers present on wet and slippery
streets and the increased stopping distances arising from such
conditions.. .
Always maintain: your brakes,
windshield wiper blades and
lights in the best possible con.
dition: About one out of every
five fatal acidents in 1949 was
attributed to some form of vision
obscurement. :
‘CHRISTMAS FIRES
INJURE CHILDREN
Some American children may

the standpoint of fires.
Use of flammable corations,
careless smoking by adults near
Christmas trees, and selection ot
. toys which can cause injury are
among the special hazards in‘ the
home at Christmas time, the National Board states.
The organization offered this
check list for parents, ‘to reduce
the hazard to children during the
Christmas holidays:
1, Do not dress children? in
‘flimsy, flammable costumes.
2: Do not use lighted candles
at Christmas. Use electric lights
instead.
3. When choosing new Christmas lights, look for marking
which indicates listing by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc.
4, Do not use cotton or paper
decorations on your tree unless
they are flame-proofed.
5. Look for the marking which
indicates listing by Underwriters’
Laboratories, Inc., on electrical
toys, and supervise the children
when they .play with such toys.
6. Do not buy toys using gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable fluids. Be very careful
in selecting toy chemical sets.
7. Remove all wrappings from
the house soon after presents are

REPEATING GUN FIRES
TABLE TENNIS BALL
An improved repeating sub
machine gun, which shoots nothing more dangerous than six
table tennis balls, is being offered
. in local toy shops.
The gun is similar to former
models which were single’ shot,
air propelled for weapons, except the new type fires six shots
in rapid succession.
The table tennis balls leave the
barrel with considerable velocity,
but dealers say the projectiles
are harmless to children, windows or even electric light bulbs.
