every one can go out. Now without

the winter months. A petition has
been signed and sent to Washington

Of a river’s lullaby.
I sing of little citiesIn the California hills,
I sing of the little cities
I sing of the little cities—
Little cities o’ mine;
Litle Cities O’ Mine
There are songs of the world’s great cities
With their ceaseless throbbing din,
There are song§$ of their wealth and power, .
Their splendor and squalor and sin;
But . sing of the little cities
Where the dim, old pathways lie,
And the nights are filled with the music
Caressed by the winds of heaven
And succored by snow-born rills;
Each one with its man made canyon,
_ Its tunnels and ditches and shaft,
Where of old the giants labored
And the wine of adventure quaffed.
Dreaming the dreams of old,
Yet hailing the rainbow promise
Of a glad new age of gold:
Wearing the badge of courage
When the hours are dull and grey,
And holding romance and wonder
In the name of a by gone day.
Whose olden paths were emblazoned
By the heroes of forty nine;
I sing of their dauntless courage;
I pledge them my faith and love;
May the way be bright before them, i
May the skies be blue above.

FOSSIL ODDITY
IS DISCOVERED
BERKELY, Dec. 9,—A lifelike
reproduction of the head and neck
of Synthetoceras tricoraatus, which
must have provided the small boy’s
ideal of a_ self-starting sling-shot
seven million years ago, if there
were any small boys at that. time, has
just been made under the direction
of R. A. Stirton, curator of the vertebrate collection, Museum of Paleontology, University of California.
The specimen, from an animal which
may have resembled the California
tule elk, in size, is extremely rare,
and when une: ed by Stirton in
the Clarendon district of the Texas
Panhandle, consisted only of the upper portion of the skull, together
with the horns.
The unusual feature of the animal
unknown in any other fossi? specimen, is a long horn arising from the
premaxillae on each side of the nasal
passage and bifurcate at the top in
perfect resemblance of the gmall
boy’s sling-shot,. It is supposed that
the horn was used as both an offensive and defensive weapon, but tis
pitchfork characteristics may have
provided other uses as well. It is admitted that thé animal must have
presented a strange sight, even
among the oddly accoutered creatures
of the period. In addition to this
horn atop its nose, the animal had
two single prong frontal horns.
The animal appears to have ranged on the Texas plain in the lower
Pliocene period, together with the
tremendous bear dog, bigger than
the biggest. bear now known and
having both canine and bear characteristics to a marked extent. The
field lin which these fossils were
found has been known since 1890,
making.it one of the oldest in the
country. It is also one of the most
prolific in fossil specimens.
