PARALLEL PARKING
(Contiuned from Page One)
m event an accident occurs.”
Safety organizations backing the
parallel parking system specify
three reasons for its popularity: 1.
Persons stépeping from the curb be‘tween cars have clear vision the
highway; 2. Cars do not ‘have to
back into traffic when leaving 4
Parking area; 3. A greater area for
moving traffic is opened.
of
The new staté'law requiring parallel parking follows.
“Except when loading or unloading merchandise, no person shall
park or leave standing any vehicle
at the curb or edge of a through
State highway unless. both right
wheels of the vehicle are within 18
inches of the curb or edge of such
highway.’’
Division of highways of the department of public works has been
instructed by Director Earl Lee Kelly to cooperate with California Highway Patrol in assisting cities to
meet demands of the new state law
on parallel parking.

Christmas in Shanghai
Just One of Their Days
HEN Christmas comes to Shanghai, a cross-section of the world
makes holiday.

one more celebration. So the Chinaman himself adds to the din with firethe making of calls.
the observance of the season by this
} most cosmopolitan city. Shanghai’s
“social registerites” start plans for din
ners and dances as early as the mid*
. dle of November; immediately reserva.
tions are checked off on the calendars
of ballrooms and restaurants. The
exact form of observance varies with
the nationality divisions of the city.
In the Russian section, the day is observed as it is on the steppes or in
Moscow. The French greet Santa
Claus in their own way, even though
the wax dolls have to be brought far
from the Champs Elysees. The Japanese prefet to make merry by drinking saki. The English must have their
plum pudding and holly.
At the mission schools, where boys
and girls are taught in separate classes,
Christmas carols around the tree give
modest school girls a chance not only
‘of singing hymns but of “seeing hims.”
In interior China, however. most of
the people prefer to celebrate their
own Dragon-boat, Mid-Autumn, and
New Year holidays rather than this
“imported” one. * They do ‘not even try
to understand these queer foreigners.

Why? Because gas heating so completely and thoroughly
lives up in performance to all its fine points.

Gas Heat Can’i Be Beat!
Gas heating’s fine points are these: You save money on the
equipment you buy because the first cost is less. Automatic
thermostat equipment is lowest in cost. And each piece of
gas heating equipment is complete in itself. The gas fuel is
delivered in a pipe, you order it as you use it and pay for it
after you use it. Gas fuel, too, ignites instantly—without
-the bother of matches or tapers.
df It’s Plenty Reasonable, Too!
Over 200,000 Northern California families using gas heat
know its reasonable cost. Month after month throughout
the year when all the costs of house heating are figured in—
gas heating is too inexpensive to do without.
