No spectacular runs, but Abraham Lincoln at Gettsyburg: * the people shall not perish from this earth!” found belief in the ultimate triumph and endurance of Democracy was asserted in 1861 — when the lightening of Civil War already was flashing from field guns: not be a patient confidence in the ultimate justice of the people? Is there any better or equal hope in the world? Today that same faith and hope guarantee American Democracy. With the nation still battling recession, experiencing unfortunate misunderstandings, among groups and factionc—witnessing the serious schism in the ranks of labor, and threats of international war, it is reassuring to remember Linco!n’ s words. “With malice toward none, with charity for all, firmness in the rizht—let us strive to finish the work we are in—to do all which may achieve peace among ourselves and *’ So long as Democracy lives, Lincoln will live in memory as one of its high apostles. As was said of him at the moment of his death: “‘Now he belongs to the Ages.” —Contributed. with all nations. . This week America honors the memory of one of her greatest sons on the . 30th anniversary of his birth. And since Lincoln, just as we of this generation, was destined to live in an era of uncertainty and crisis, it is worth speculating on the attitude he would take on major problems of today. What would that gaunt, sad-faced man think of attempts by Nazi and Fascist sympathizers to infect Americans with the ideologies of dictatorships, for instance? Curiously applicable would be the very words he voiced ‘government of the people, by the people, for ‘Lincoln's pro“Why should there with Scout Ideals Dr. As one way of vitalizing the theme ‘Scouting Carries On American Ideals which is the keynote of the . current Scout Week, marking the 29th birthday of the Movement in this country, the Senior Scouts, members of the Boy Scouts of America are being asked to commit themselves . to a new Citizenship Dedication recently written for them by the Chief Scout Executive, Dr. James E. West, because of his conviction that young men with Scout training are a great potential force for preserving and advancing what are recognized as the best things in America’s life. Senior Scouts have, not alone by age, but by _ specia! training as Scouts, acquired a definite and distinctive citizenship standing. These involve not only many pleasures and privileges but definite responsibilities to cooperate and render service; to understand and care about other people; to be tolerant and respectful of the rights of others; to be courageous. self-reliant and vigilant in showing faith faith in God. West’s charge to these young men is wel! worth quoting—"“As Scout citizens, accept your responsibility for extending among those with whom you come in contact their understanding and appreciation of the ideals of Scouting and the principles that have made us, and in my judgment will always keep us, a great democracy.” e existence of a group of 8,400,000 present or former members of the Scout Movement, all pledged to that conception of citnzenship, is an unmistakable asset in our naBoy Boy Scout in America and tional life. i 107 Mil Street Nevada County Photo Center PHONE 67 Portraits, Commercial Photography, 8 Hour Kodak Finishing, Old Copies, ts Bulstaing sad Framing, Kodaks and Photo Supplies Grass Valley Movie Cameras and Films GRASS VALLEY Upholstering Shop Norman Mincer, Prop. : 465’ Sou. The latest and most jovial of popular numbers seems to be without doubt, “Romance Runs in the Family”. Might be hard to get but worth a try. 000 BOOKS We have just finished Admiral Byrd’s book “Alone.” (Putnam) R. G. D. regrets, but we do not like it at all. We don’t say it isn’t very thrilling and no doubt it is extremely accrmate, but we just don’t like Dick’s attitude. It struck us he was being unselfish and inconsiderate to the point of exasperation. We resent having to go through all his agonies with him especially as we felt it was all very “unnecessary. His rescue party could have come for him earlier as easily as not, and anyway we completely failed to understand why it was so essential that he should spend that experimental six months in Little America absolutely all alone. Science, we feel, would have been better served;had he not done so, However, this is just our private grouch, read the book, you may agree with him and not with us, and in any event you are sure to find it very interesting. NATURE Now is the time to remember your daily good deed, and feed the wild birds. They recognize a bird restaurant with amazing alacrity, and flock around in great numbers. For salad we serve them small pieces of suet and bacon, for entrees bread crumbs, grain and hard boiled egg, and top it off with apples for dessert. ——o0o SPORTS Those of you who missed last Saturday’s basket ball game at the NeFOR SALE TENT HOUSE; Includes framework and board floor and furnishing. $140 worth of material in it. The -thoulght occurred to us the other day, when talking to some much travelled new comers whose praise for Nevada County was so lavish we felt a mite guilty of some laxity in civic pride. There is of course such a thing as being so close to the picture that one loses perspective. 000 “SQUEAK But at that, we do wish the new bridge on the Plaza would hurry itself. wp and get finished, and we also that very narrow and dangerous cut, especially now that the highway into town has. been rerouted along that said cut.
