This may sound like the beginning of a fairy tale, but
really, a generation from now it may be told as a fact to children—school children.
Once upon a time Grass Valley and Nevada City, the
tax payers and the fathers and mothers of school children, had
an opportunity to act together in grasping a great opportunity. .
The Federal Government was ready to give the two cities a large sum of money for the purpose of building a Union
High School, a school that would reflect in its architecture and
its facilities for education, in its spacious recreation grounds
and park, the high ideals of the people of the two communities.

These two forces met. Unfortunately, the opportunity
came almost overnight; there was little time for the leadership of either croup to enlist the support of the taxpayers and
the fathers and mothers of children. The decision of the two
groups to accept or reject this great opportunity had to bind, .
at least for the time being, the people of both communities.
‘So, once upon a time, a great opportunity came for the upbuilding of Grass Valley and Nevada City. Was it rejected,
or, was it accepted ?
