PRODUCION OF GOLD SAID
TO BE ON INCREASE
fold production on ‘the Amertean continent -has been stimulated
by the fell in prices for other commodites, according R. H. Grant, director of the mint, which buys practically all the new geld producéd
both: in the United States and Canada, has. made up preliminary figures indicating that the 1930 gold
output of the United States exceeded the 1929 figure by $500,000,
reaching a total of $46,151,000. He
considers that the tendency to increase is being carried forward so
far in 1931.
“The stimulus to gold mining operations is an expected matter in
periods like this,’’ Director” Gran.
commented. ‘‘As selling prices of
lead, zine, copper and other metals
drop, mining wage heales decrease,
and more labor is made available
for the gold operations. Further, the
costs of supplies and materials for
gold operations is lessened, while
the price of its production remains
stable.”’
;
However, the increases in new
gold supply noted in the last eighteen months do not yet compare with
the increases which took place after
1892. At that time, the world gold
output inereased by 100 _ per cent
during a period when wholesale
prices of other commodities sunk to
low levels. Discovery of new deposits
in South Africa and Alaska contributed.

COMMUNICATION
It is unfortunate runate indeed that a
Misunderstanding has arisen in the
community concering the law suit
which the owner of the Bridgeport
pleasure recently filed against the
operators of the Omega mine. Iu
your issue of last week Ifind a communication’ by. one who signed
*Miner” to his article. It is obvious
that the writer of that article was
not in possenion of the facts.
The owner of the pleasure resort
doesnot ask in. his law suit that the}
utine be closed or that any other mining activities cease. He has merely
submitted to the court a sworn state:
ment of facts and he is perfectly willing that a jury of twelve pick and
shovel miners pass on his controversy
with the mining corporation. The
operators of the mine are foreign
corporation and has its California
office at Yuba City.
The law suit in. question was filed
. by a citizen of Nevada County, and
all that he asks is justice. ‘The jury
will consists of twelve citizens of
Nevada County. The judge will be
Judge Tuttle of the Nevada County
Superior Court.
As counsel for Mr. Kneebone I am
familiar with all the facts involvea
and I know that his contentions are
just. If he wins his law suit the mining industry of this county will not
suffer.
I respectfully request that anyone
interested in knowing. the facts read
the legal complaint in case No. 5891
now on file in the office of the
county cleark; or if he prefers he
may call at my office and read a copy
of the complaint here.
FOREST SERVICE NOTES
The love of a forester for the trees
that he lived with and protected was
recently exempliffed by a simple ana
impressive cremony in the Boise
National Forest of Idaho, when
brother forest officers scattered the
ashes of the late forest supervisior
E. C.Shepard to the winds of the
great pine forest.

OLD DUNCAN GOLD MINE
TO BE DEVELOPED SOON
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 12.—The
Gold Ledge Mining Company,, Ltd.,
has acquired two mining properties
near Hornitos, Mariposa County, one
of the famous old mifiing centers of
the California Mother Lode, it was
announced at the local office of the
company today. The concern has
taken on purchase contract ,the well
kown Duncan gold mine which has
a known production record of more
tha $600,000 to’a depth of only 160
feet. While the main shaft is 1Yv
feet deep, no stoping has ever been
done below the 160 level.
Development of this property
started between 1850 and 1860 and
production from the West or main
orebody was continuous for many
years. Leasers, subsequently, workea
shaft and took out $34,000 from
high grade, the low grade ore being
to develop the west orebody at depth
and arrange for the installation -of
mill grade as well as the high grade
ores. Former operators were interornia are not and never have been
closed to prospecting and legitimate
mining development is proved by the
fact that 76 per cent of all application
for mineral patent, made during the
years 1910 to 1930, inclusive, were
favorably reported on by the U. S.
Forest service, according to Ei. A.
Barrett, asistanj regional foroster
of the San Francisco headquarters.
In over 80 per cent of the contested
cases the Department of the Interior
sustained the Forest Service protest.
During this same period the Forest
Service instituted contested against
55 groups of mineral locations on
national forest land, which were
being used for purpose other than
mining, and has been succesful in

Empty bean cans and a cunning
“bean’’ won a.battle waged between
Jack Benson, a U. S. Forest Service
lookout man and a raiding party of
pack rats for possession of a strategic position on Odell Butte in the
Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. Jack had lost heavily in several
night attacks on his cabin and his
ammunition and morals was runnig
low. All ma-made tricks and traps
had failed’to catch the wily pack rats
and he was badly in need of sleep.
Then he had his big moment. He
took a bean can and cut the top
crosswise, dividing it into quarters.
These sharp pointed quarters he
pushed in, leaving an opening just
large enough for the head of a rat.
After fixing one can he baited it and

The Gold Ledge Company also has
acquired full title to the Parallel
mine, in the same district. Little
work has been done on this property
but engineers report that surface indications are very good.
The Gold Ledge Company, backed by San Francisco capital, has a
capitalization of $1,000,000 non-assessable shares, par 25 cenfs, anda
it is expected that the stock will be
listed on both local and Eastern exchanges. Negotiations also are under way for the purchase of other
gold properties in addition to the
company’s projects in Mariposa
County.
