AGRICULAURAL COMMISSIONER Cabbage is one of the most universally cultivated of our garden Plants. Early cabbage is practically consumed as a green vegetable. The late crop on the other hand, is handled as a fresh vegetable, as a storage crop, and for the manufacture of souerkraut. VARIETIES AND PLANTING Golden Acre, Copenhagen and Early Winnigstadt are three of the best early varieties and should be planied in March. Flat Dutch, Danish Ball Head, and Red Dutch are generally used for the late crop and are planted in June or July. The distance between plants of the early varieties should ‘be one and one half feet, the late varieties two feet with the rows three feet apart. FERTILIZERS AND STORAGE A satisfactory fertilizer for the Planting season will carry~1 1-2 to 2 per cent of nitrogen ,6 to 8 per cent of phosphoric acid, and about 10 per cent of potash. This fertilizer should be-scattered broadcast over the area at the rate of 1,000 pounds per acre. At the approach of the growing season the development of the cabbage should be stimulated by applying a side dressing of 150 to 200 pounds per acre of a fertilizer carrying a high percentage of nitrate of soda of sulphate of ammonia with little or no phosphorie acid or potash! in it. : (Heads maturing in hot weather need to be aut as.soon as they become hard, otherwise they will burst and rot. When ‘they mature during' cool weather, they remain in prime condition a long time if stored in a cool dry place. Narrow Gauge Between Twin Cities is Dismantled The salvage crew in charge of removing rails, spikes, and tie plates is now entering the city limits, having left practically nothing of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge railroad from Nevada City west, save the right-of-way. Huge stacks of redwood ties, and large piles of spikes and tie plates, are being accumulated at the old freight yard on Bennett street. Rails are shipped out almost as fast as they are taken up. The greater part of the Narrow Gauge rolling stock, after reconditioning has already gone, presumably to the Hawaiian islands. Then there was the dumb co-ed who thought she had to take along @ tin cup and some pencils when she went on a blind date. “Jones is quite conceited, isn’t he?’’ “I’l1 say he is.
