SIGHT METER TO
MEASURE LIGHT
A deviee of recent invention that
promisés to become an almost indispensable feature of modern household equipment is the sight meter.
This is designed, primarily, as a
gauge of light in a room, just as the
thermometer is a gauge of heat. It
goes farther, however. It not only
measures the intensity of light given
‘out by, lamp or bracket, but records
it in such terms as to enable the
housewife to use the lighfing service
at her disposal to the best advantage
when engaged upon some task which,
if performed under an_ inadequate
light, might pees injurious to her
eyes.
The’ sight meter is a portable instrument and, apparently, simple of
construction. It consists of a disc
and a meter placed side by side in a
bakelite case about four inches long
by two and one half inches wide. The
dise is a sensitive plate, and light
falling upon it generates electricity lof the You Bet section.

along wires to the adjacent meter

various visual tasks, such as, for instance, reading (both normal and
fine -~print), sewing, ‘close scrutinizing and what is called critical seeing.
A needle indicates upon the scale the
quantity of light shed upon the dist
and from this the person, engaged in
any visual tasks mentioned can determine whether he or she is receiving sufficient light for that particular task.
Not only, then, does this remarkable device measure light but it indicates the minimum amount of light
one needs for every purpose, just as
the ordinary household thermometer
indicates healthful temperatures.

Rebecca and Abigail Bates
N AFTER. years, when admiring
tourists and school children. asked
the Misses Rebecca and Abigail Bates
to write in their albums, they always
signed themselves, with due “pride,
“The American army of two, in the
War of 1812.”
One bright August morning, only
two months after the formal declaration of war, a British battleship appeared off the coast of Massachusetts,
making straight for the little village
of Scituate, whose harbor was _ filled
with small, defenseless fishing craft.
The only ones to, see the ship were
and Abigail, girls in~ their—
teens, who. happened to be up in the
lighthouse of which their father was
keeper, trimming and polishing the big
lanterns. Their father was away, bartering for meal in a neighboring village. So. the two girls ran out “and
gave the warning.
Back at the lighthouse Rebecca and
Abigail again looked out over the sea,
and saw that five small boats, bristling
with armed soldiers, had left the ship
and ‘were bound for the harbor.
Now Rebecca had beguiled many a
long hour in their lonesome home
learning to beat out a rhythm on an
old drum,
of producing a squeaky but quite distinguishable tune on her father’s fife.
Armed with drum and fife the two sisters again ran out of the lighthouse,
took their stand behind a* low dune
near the shore, and set ‘up a dismal
little tune. At first their music seemed
rather a joke. Rebecca and Abigail
sat down on the sand, breathless, and
giggled at each other, rather frightened at what they were doing. But
the British boats steadily approached
nearer and nearer the shore.. The
girls jumped to their feet again. After
all, the idea was a good one.
they started in. Louder and shriller
squeaked the fife. deeper and. faster
rolled the drum. Back and forth they
marched, behind the protecting dune,
accompanied by a very torrent of martial music.
