Trails of “49. The ceremony which
will take place at noon on Saturday,
under the auspices of the Tri-County
Federation. of Womens Clubs of
Placer Nevada and El Dorado Counties, will be the unveiling of an attractive marker donated by Alta
California, Ine., located on a spot a
few feet from where the historical
event took place, by Governor James
Rolph, Jr. f
The Governor will be the guest
of honor at the luncheon served in
the Auburn High School auditorium
by the Wednesday Club of Appiegate, and after the ceremony will
continue on his way to Lake Tahoe
where he is to be the honorary official of the National Ski Tournament
being conducted to the sports carnival by Senator Bert Cassidy.
Numerous two column cuts and the
story of the event were released to
the metropolitan papers by the publicity department of Alta California,
Inc., and the press clippings show
this to be one of the . publicized
events of the year for the gold
counties, Placer, Nevada and El
Dorado.
A big turn out should be on hand
to greet the Governor, and to establish the importance of the historicak\value of the days:of ’49 in this

to sée the 1932 Olympic Games,
thousands wil
want to review the “Land of ’49”’
and tell the story of their visit to
the historic empire of gold which
created the first influx of travelers,

Radio publicity over K F B K
takes the form of a fifteen minute
program on Friday night, February
26th, at 7 P. M. which will tell the
story and give three musieal numbers all in keeping with the Saturday’s celebration.

With Mrs. Luther » Burbank as
honorary chairman. of Arbor Day,
California is planning a tree-planting tribute to the memory of the
immortal’ “plant wizard’ on his
birthday anniversary, March 7th.
Arbor Day activities are being
sponsored by the Outdoor Christmas
Tree Association of California and a
plea is being sent to garden clubs,
women’s organizations, “civic groups
schools, chambers, of commerce and
other civic: organizations .to plant
outdoor Christmas trees suitable for
outdoor decoration in future years,

According to Claresgce F. Pratt,
State president’ of the Outdoor
Christmas Tree Association, reports
received from scores of organizations which are planning Arbor Day
observances indicate that several
thousand trees will be planted that
day along our State Highways, in
public parks and other appropriate
places. A number of organizations
will make thé California Arbor Day
the occasion for tree-planting in
honor of the Washington Bicentennial in cooperation with the pro‘gram of the American Tree Association to plant 10,000,000 trees
throughout the Nation this year.
The director of thé Outdoor
Christmas Tree Association, for
this district is Mrs. Charles E. Parsons of Nevada City. Mrs. Parsons
has been active in this work: and
has taken a course in forestry and
tree planting. Her husband is the
owner of the famous Gillette Nursery of Nevada City and she takes
an active part ih assisting in the
study of the different species of
trées, plants and shrubs.

W. G. Weaver, river miner on
the South Yuba, lost an eye Tuesday when struck in the face by a
streel drill. He was taken to a Grass
Valley hospital where surgical attion was given him.

mining property.
Ralph Bender of San Francisco,
International Mining Engineer, and
newly elected mining °appraiser, expects to be here some two weeks
viewing property.
L. E. Stine of San Francisco was

mining man, and George Frye of
Palo Alto, registered at the National
Hotel last week end.

C. S. (Wilson, dry goods. merchant
of Roseville who recently opened a
branch store in Grass Valley, was in
Nevada “City yesterday morning.
Wilson was: looking for a location for
a Nevada City branch, he announced. He expects to return here in a
few. days and may complete arrangements for opening a store here.
Teacher's Father.Dies—
Michael Curnéen, father of A.
Richard Curneen, instruetor in the
Grass Valley schools, died at his
home in Crescent City Wednesday
afternoon, according to word reeeived by the son. He and his wife left
at once for Crescent City. Michael
Curneen was 84, a native of Queenstown, Ireland.
Power -Line Completed—
-Linemeéent of the Pacific Gas and
Electric Company have completed
installation of a two-mile power line
to the Boss Mine. The current was
turned on last. Saturday, and early
this week the machinery of the mine
was under electric power. The mine
is operated by the Bradley interesio,
with Charlea J. Lyser in charge.

BAR MEADOWS DANCE
TO OPEN TOMORROW
J. B. Sparks, new dance manager
announced last night that he had
leased with an option to puy the La
Barr Meadows Dance: Hall two miles
south on the Auburn _ highway.
Many improvements are being made
including new novel lighting effects
which will later include the famous
mirror ball. This gives the effect of
falling snow. The floor will be resurfaced, and many other improvements to add to the “joy. of the
dancers. The new name_ will be
known as Joyland in’ the future.
Two bands are the big feature for
the grand opening. The battle will
be between the Oregon ‘‘Rogues” of
Portland, Oregon, va; Ted White’s
“Californians” of San Francisco.
For a cash prize of $100.00. Everyone buying a_ ticket gets two votes
which they use to vote for their
favorite orchestra. Door prizes will
be given to the first fifty couples in.
A prize waltz, also a prize fox trot
will be features of the evening with
a big midnight jamboree: Come. all
prepared to have the time of your
life and you will not be disappointed.
The dances will be presented only
every two weeks, the next dance
