A, letter received by H. U. Maxfield of the Sixteen-to-One Mine,
. from his friend A. Beeby Thompson
resist Nazi invasion but.to store up
‘strength and munitions for a day of
German atonement. The letter. follows:
\ 18; St. Swithin’s Lane,
London, E. C. 4, England.
January 6th, 1941.
}H, U. Maxfield, Esq.,
1611 Russ Bldg., San Francisco.
:Dear Mr. Maxfield,
Yes we follow U. S. A. news very
intently and are tremendously cheered by the hearty professions of
friendship and the determination of
vour president to prevent Hitlerism
from being forced upon the unwiliing nations of the earth. The idiocy
of hoping to convert Belgium, Holland. Denmark, Norway, TchekaSlovakia,. Poland and France to a
system which involved their invasion and submission to Gestapo rule
should be apparent to an imbecile. It
is very difficult for unprepared li:tle Britain with its 40,00,000 population of peace lovers to fight unaided a fully armed country which is
now able to draw on the resources of
most of Europe and the labor of
200,000,000 souls, whilst like vultures in the offing are Russia and Japan both ready to pounce on a decaying carcass. In the realization
that we are fighting for a just cause
against a policy of intolerance, force
and slavery, we know we shall win
if only ‘our resources hang out as
they will with the help of America
and our stout colonies. Against overwhelming odds in men and armaments our boys have performed miraculous feats and if only we get to
parity in all the services, we will
show the Huns which is the dominant race. Our soldiers and airmen all
‘feel equal to take on 2-or 3 to one in
any fight, and for Italians they feel
only contempt in a square combat.
The Bulgars, Serbians and Turks are
better fighters than the Huns who
can only attack in mass under mass
hysteria.
Well, as you know, we have had a
hot time in England of late and are
not yet. able to give them a full taste
of their own medicine, but they will
get it yet and then we shall _ hear
them whine and protest upon our inhumanity, Although causing terrible
suffering to untold numbers and losses that can never be replaced, the
results are the opposite of those intended, for the raids simply intensify the determination to resist until we can hit back with equal force.
One scarcely hears a complaint from
people who have lost all, and in*the
clubs and homes one hears only a
determination to see the war through
whatever the sacrifices. The loss of
ancient churches, city halls, public
monuments, clubs, palaces, hotels,
mansions, museums and __libraries,,
which can never be replaced, which
is such a delight to the Hun, causes
much heartburn. here but, no relaxation of resolution. To them such records of a past culture have no interfor the construction of its $31,000,.

I have just received a letter from
my friend, Mr. Clark who was tortured by the Iron Guard (Nazis) otf
Roumania. He writes from the. American Hospital, Istannbul, where the
doctor hopes to get his half paralyzed Jimbs back into shape in time.
The filthy swine try every means to,
induce false declarations that can
be broadcast to the. world as examples of British subversive action.
With all best wishes for the New
Year and hopes for peace.
Yours very sincerely,
A. BEEBY THOMPSON.
