HARRIS . cE REXALL DRUG STORE Phone 100 OFHICH IN CITY HALL PHONE ‘575 By PAUL {iat from an address before WORLD REVOLUTION AHEAD We are faced with world revolution as well’as a world war. It is not a new revolution, not along a political revolution, but a revolution 9 ethics, culture, and every relizgion—a revolution of our entire society. It started unnoticeably back’ in the revolutionary philosophies developed before the turn of this 3 Aentury, in the thinking of Nietzsche and Frued aswell as Marx. While Marx-is the glorified prophet of the anti-democratic societies which have sprung into being in ever widening scope since the last war, Nietzsche and Frued and others of their ilk are the non-political re-socializers whose socalled enlightenment lured great masses of people away from their ethics and morals their social ways and habits of thought, and plunged them into this dazzling materialistic era in which we are now groping our way toward yet indiscernible ’ solutions. The Soviets first brought these revolutionary ‘theories into practice in a way that aims at every. foundation of our historic democratic way of life—not only toward the abolition of capitalism, but toward the uprooting of our conceptions of moral justice which were founded on the Ten Commandments and the Christian teachings. I say this now] without criticism but as pure statement of fact, for we must discard both criticism and prejudice if we are +; to see where we are now or where’ Wwe are going. BE REALISTS ABOUT RUSSIA At any rate, we are involved in a world revolution in which the war is an incident and which will not be over when the war is over, and we must plan our way. The Communist experiment has not drifted into socialism in Russia; but on the way it inspired such counteracting but imitative systems of single headed materialism as Fascism in Italy and Nazism in Germany. Our occupation of Sicily and Italy has brought us straight up against the historic fact that the unspeakable Mussolini came . Fascism or Naziem, into power originally to save Italy from Communism. The news from . Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia and teven France, daily has shown us lately .that the political forces we are liberating in those countries are not Roosevelt democrats or Churchill followers but the revolutionists who are the predominant antidFascist in every corner of Europe from Archangel.-to -Spain—socialists, syndicalists, communists or whatever you call them or they call themselves. They are not of us. There can he no compromise with]. a despicable, SSeae Mas FICFITIOUS NAME State of California _ County of Nevada. $8. RusSia is apt to come out of this war the dominant nation of Europe, and Asia; and in the following years, in my opinion, she is apt to become the greatest nation. on earth. She is winning great battles. She has done much to help us incidentally, while saving herself. But Russia would be the last nation on earth to be swayed in her policies by emotionalism or by sentiment; so we must look at these things coldly and as straight as she does. And we must get our people to look at them the way. It will same This is the greatest revolution in the history of the world and iis Philosophies have encroached upon this hemisphere and even into the country, this city, into your minds and mine. We have borrowed greatiy from the totalitarianism this revolvtion preaches as its commandments. We have inched our democratic way closer and closer toward centralized federal government controls in various ways, even toward socialism a little; and certainly we, by our new ‘are far down the road toward establishing that the state is no longer the creature of man but man is the creature of the state. Now what does our government planto do about this encroaching under. revolution? It will do whatever the majority of the people of this country are led to believe or themselves decide we should do. We can adopt the principles of this revolution in practice without ever changing a dot in the Constitution ff a docile Congress and people, and a willing leader, want it. HOPKINS TO TAX ALL I do not mean to suggest the New Deal or Mr. Roosevelt intend to go so far. As near as.I can make it out, they have primarily in mind some kind of a new social workers’ and labor union democracy for post war. The social workers side of it you ean see in the counterpart of Britain’s Beveridge report, which Roosevelt’s planning board: has presented to congress, and which is to be begun by the pending Wagner bill, a plan: ‘too. well discussed already ‘to vast, heavy taxation on payrolls— some want 10 to 20 per cent instead of 4 per cent—in return for a ‘promise that the fedéral government may care in the future for all citizens “‘from the ‘.eradle -:to the grave.’ -It would make: thisnation ‘something of a social workers’ paradise. : I think I understood it best when I read a recent New Yorker article . (a profile) on Harry Hopkins the
president’s truest and. best friend. The social half of. what the -government is. planning. for ue is best represented in the character, hopes,.and plan. of Mr. WHopkins—a_ social worker himself .with a long. and earnest career. devoted.to understanding the lowest: strata in American life the unfortunates at. the bottom of, ‘the ladder—the problem, for example of the Americar on New. York’s Mast Side. Mr. Hépkins wants to tax all the people tremendously from payrolls to furnish déctors; hospitalization, pre-natal care, ‘cradle assistance, burial insurance and a helping hand against all:the hazards of life, and drain the pot from .which the salaries and savings of the working classes (up higher in the unions and the middle classes) are drawn, and syphon this money into a huge federal reservior, which the politicians will manage, sequestering these -billions of dollars for spending purposes in the treasury. It would turn and drive our whole economic system toward aiding the least fort‘unate instead of giving him a job and a wage to aid himeelf. -The cure for unemployment is y}employment — not. insurance. The cure for old age need is a good ‘wage and a. stable country in which sav‘ings are protected+—not a tax coljlection scheme that drains money out of pockets in a violatile economy where inflation, tomorrow may destroy the investment, where rising or falling prices. make social security insecure. The fundamentals of security are not government tax reservoirs but economic which protects employment, .wages, prices, leisuré, private insurance,— and this is especially true in view. of the vast federal debt with which we jare confronted. warrant us spending extra time ony. it now. In essénce, it is a system of] ‘peared to. be in excellent condition. stability, 4 “THESE TWO GREAT \ MARINE CORPS OF THE ={ WA, WORLD.. THE ROYAL Ne MARINES AND UNITED STATES MARINES..
