TREE CENSUS READY
CONSERVATION WEEK
BERKELEY, Feb. 3.—Wide interest in his census of famous or noteworthy California trees is reported
by Professor Woodbridge Metcalf,
extension forester of the University
of California. The census is to be
published in connection with the
forthcoming Conservation Week. Not
only has Professor Metcalf, heard
from a number of California points,
but easterners have written as well,
telling of, notable trees in this state.
Anyone possessing or knowing of any
tree of unusual size or widespread
sentimental or hiistorie interest, is
invited to send a description of the
same to Professor Metcalf in Gianversity here.
Among the recent tree histories
received by Professor Metcalf. are
four which contain information on
the state’s largest laurels. These are
the Teel laurel, at 624 Lewelling
Boulevard, San Lorenzo; the Sink
Ranch laurel, on the ‘west side of the
old highway, two miles. north: .of
Cloverdale the ‘Laurel of San Marcos pass, about five miles west of
Santa Barbara, and the’ Glen Ranea
laurel, about two miles west of Gilroy, Santa Clara. county.
The highest ofthese trees is the
“Laurel of San Marcos,” which towers 96 feet. The Teel laurel has the
greatest circumference at the ground
with 49 feet, 9 inches. The Sink
Ranch laurel has the greatest crown
or branch diameter of 130 feet.
The. laurel is also known as the
bay tree and the pepper wood in this
state. In Oregon the species is known
as the Oregon myrtle. The spécies is
widely distributed in the coast
range, where it*reaches its best development along river flats in or near
the redwood region. j * ;

EUTHANASIA FOR
INCURABLES . sPLEA OF SAVANT
BERKELEY, Feb. 3.—In the hope
of bringing about a better general
understanding of the doctrine of euthanasia, or the merciful killing of
hopelessly incurable humans, Dr.
Samuel J. Holmes, professor of zoology in the University of California,
has accepted membership in the advisory board of the National Society
for the Legality of Euthanasia, with
headquarters in New York. The society is endeavoring to obtain the
passage of both state and national
legislation which will permit the
merciful elimination of humans who
have no hope of surviving painful
disease, or who are hopeless idiots.
“There are doubtless a number of
doctors now who put their patients
out of their misery when there is no
hope of a cure,’’ Dr. Holmes said.

comes to the execution of criminals.
