LETTER TO EDITOR
(Continued from Page One)
And when they estimate the spread
between their monthly paychecks,
what can they be expécted to -do
when they come home after the war
and vote. ;
Politicians have seized a time
when they must have unity and have
greater problems to solve and they
are fully aware of the fact that we
are mentally too lazy to think and
act individually. We are derelect. We
have’ never had to recite fervently
and out of the depths of our souls
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”
never having been as hungry as the
pecples where this prayer originatWhen the framers of our constitution, after several months delibWe already have’

‘Tet us forget for the time our
linfallibility and adopt this instru. ment. While it is not what I want (he
wanted only one house and no pay)
;I am not prepared to say I am wrong.
_ It *provides for a minimum of interference on the part of the federal
government guarantees life and liberty of its citizens and will provide
the most enlightened government
that any people have ever had and
will continue to do so until we become so decadent and corrupt as to
destroy it.” :
This has been the past history of
democracy. For years if you wished
office, you
you to de nominated and your name
went on the ballot in alphabethidal
order. The politicians recently passied a law if you were an incumbent,

advantage, At the last city election
passed afound ‘‘Forget the first
five,’ who were incumbents. When
the votes were counted; ‘four were
forgotten and the fifth almost.
We should do likewise and adopt a
slogan “Forget. the incumbents’
with the provisq that the newly elected would repeal said law providing
the president sign it. If we installed
a system of no salary for our legis~lators, traveling and living expenses
only, we would eliminate the second
class lawyers and such from our
political life. Retired businessmen
would seek office only for the honor.
and satisfaction of a job well done.
This might solve some of our trou;bles:-It has ‘been done in other countries.
How many citizens know that at
the last special session of ‘congress
called after the first of January
when the regular session was still
2onvening on March 4th, Congress
voted themselves mileage and many
of them never left Washington. California representatives could collect
held in San Francisco, a slogan—-was,
about $1200, Just how many took
this money we do not know but we.
should know this and would if we
were not so mentally lazy. If $1 was
taken directly from us we would cry
to high heaven.
A local officeholder who had collected: such money would be called
before the grand jury and made to
refund the money and he would escape indictment only iff he had good
friends on the jury. Let us beware
and aproach the solution’ of our
problems, both local, national and
foreign with grim determination and
deadly earnestness. May I ask why
have the Washington correspondents
or commentators never mentioned
this matter. Are they on the payroll
or are they afraid of not being, invited to press conferences or ih a
measure ostracized?
Or am I out of step with the new
world .and wandering in the wilderness? Please direct me to the broad
highway that all real Americans
should at this time be travelling.
