At Union Square .
SAN FRANCISCO, JAN. 9-—-(P)
.—One of San Francisco’s landmarks was a “rebel” stronghold
for a few hours yesterday
Fifteen grey clad “confederate
soldiers” captured Union Square
in the heart of the downtown district without firing a shot.
The ‘confederated—pledges of
Alpha Kappa Phi fraternity at
Stockton’s College of Pacific—
occupied the square while a big
crowd applauded. Then they took
up a. collection for the march of
dimes. .
Before invading San Francisco,
the collegians staged a rally in
Oakland. It was picketed by members of the Eastbay Civil Rights
Congress, whose spokesman said
the confederate uniforms and
flags were symbols of “oppression.”
