Rough and Ready, Once Republic,. To Get U. S. Post Office
ROUGH AND READY, June 3.
—This gold country town of Nevada County, an independent republic for a brief and musty period in its history, had won back
the trade mark of a peace-loving,
thriving community—it’s post
office.
Newcomers, either in forgiveness or curiosity about Rough
and Ready’s robust past, or be‘cause they just like the place,
have been settling here in increasing numbers,
BACK ON MAP.
As a reward and because
Rough and Ready is now securely within the Union, the Post Office Department has ordered reopened the headquarters for
townsfolk-who want to secure the
latest: piece of gossip, to pass on
some small talk of their own, to
lick an occasional stamp or even
to just loaf in the sun.
The: happy occasion will occur
June 16 when the dot that is
Rough And Ready, near Grass
Valley, will be restored to the
postal map.
A bend in the road for the
wagon trains of the gold rush
days, the determined people of
Rough And Ready tired of both
the United States and California
in 1850 and seceded.
APRIL TO JULY.
The break came in April. It
was mended July 4 of the same
year when there seemed no other
way to celebrate that holiday
without saying some nice things
about the country from which
they had withdrawn. There. were,
also some nice things to drink.
and secession was downed and
drowned. .
. Rough And Ready was named
for Gen. Zachary Taylor, who
won the nickname for his exploits
in the Mexican War. His followers established the town.
