Rough and Ready's early day private
school at Randolph Flat, with Mrs. Jeffries in charge.
W. Campbell had a barrel of whiskey at
his store in Boston Ravine, and a handy
dipper nearby. Twenty-five cents a aipper
for whiskey. When Campbell was away, Mrs.
Campbell went up into the attic by a trap
door and pulled the ladder up after her
and stayed put until her husband returned,
as she was afraid of Indians. She had
equipment to live in the attic.
$.L.Walworth and his pardner made the
first brick in the county. They owned 360
acres in the Rough and Ready district.

ASKING QUESTIONS A LOS? CAUSE
Stranger arriving at the diggins wanted
information where to dig:

W.M.Weber, now ninty years of age, relates that his father, J.N.Weber, crossed
the plains to California in the early days.
That he and his father did teaming to all
the mining camps. While teaming he stopped
at the Hudson House above the Anthony House.
He was employed at the Spenceville copper mine, where they made copper from tin
cans, and oxen shoes with the water from
the mine shaft, eating the material to that
of the copper.
USING HIS WITS
Forty years ago, Hoboes were numerous.
One afternoon, Mrs. Mary Morrison had fed
four. Daniel Morrison saw the fifth one
entering the gate, so he quickly put on an
old patched coat and started cutting wood
at aM bean rate.

if he thought the lady would give him something to eat. Morrison Teplied that he was
the fifth one who the lady of the house had
made to cut wood for a meal. The man de-~
parted immediately.

Landers Bar, valued at $100,000.00.
Afornidable array of counsel appeared
in the case, being no less than the following: Lorenze Sawyer, Stanton Buckner, Tom
Nowers, T. Freeman, N.E.Whitesides of Yuba,
and Si Brown.
A new trial was commenced the next day
and lasted ten days. Verdict on the elevenThe
defendants paid a bill of costs $1,992.00
in gold dust at $16.00 per ounce.
Edward Gassaway crossed the plains in
1857 and engaged in Hydraulic mining in
Rough and Ready, Sucker Flat, Timbuctoo.
