Simon French, owner of the Anthony House, purchased ¥7,000.00 worth of gold from some Indians. Delano mingled as Express Agent, author, leader, banker, agent, later on as a Banker on his owm account. Cousin Jack had to listen to "Yankee Doddle." . Next day at mining, the two started feuding over the nights incident, and the mine foreman told them to fight it out and then get back to work. The fight commenced over hugh boulders as the mining reached the hard pan stage. The Yankee won again. The fore-~ man pulled out a quart bottle of Bourbon whiskey, broke it over a boulder, and said, "I hereby christen the place Bourbon Hill." It was called to the Compiler's notice some large slabs of granite laying around. So, sure enough, they are at Rough and Ready. In early days were to be used to build a bank at Rough and Ready, and Grass Valley was to be moved here. As we know State Capitols, County seats and Republics were in a nervous state, and one event is that the day before the election was to be held, to see if Rough and Ready or Nevada City was to be the County Seat. Rough and Ready had a fire, and said to be set to put her out of the County seat race. Even in 1951, Alpha Kappa Phi confederates took over Rough and Ready in fun. Going through Rough and Ready in 1951, a jackass with a bell, leading a large herd of beef cattle from Indian Springs to the high mountains. Mr. Church trained this jackass to lead cattle. The gate is thrown open, out comes the jackass, heads off and gets about 20 feet, looks back, and no cattle following. Jackass turns, goes back to the gate, inside nods his head back and forth at the cattle, then makes a run through the gate, cattle following, as if they understood.
