argument the dentist was shot. During the
trial, citizens took care of Pete's donkeys. The old man was proven not guilty.
Pete died later.
Frank Beck's ranch had a still on the
place to make moonshine. The still blew
up and burned the house and barn. The still
was thrown down the well, and the place deserted. Early purchase a 410.00 gold piece
and three mortgages.
INDIAN FRANK JOHNSON RELATES
That he was working on Deer Creek, near
Rough and Ready, working for C. Novey. He
sew smoke from a cabin on fire, and found a
Chinaman burned. The Chinaman was supposed
to have gold, as he had not sent his gold
back to China, like others. Novey walked
to Nevada City to get the Sheriff.
Nearby, Stuart, living in a cabin, was
shot at through his window while eating hot
cakes. As Stuart reached for the syrup, in
doing so, ducked his head and the shot went
over his head.
Feeney was suspected of doing both of
these jobs, as well as others.
Wild scenes and strange incidences,
sound like shadows, so eager, so determined,
and at all cost hardships, at risk of life,
were these gold diggers.
A merchant heard someone digging up his
street, right in front of his store door.
Upon investigating, found a miner digging
for gold. “Hey,” said the merchant, "Your
digging up ny street." “There is no law
agin’ it," says the old miner, and kept on
digging. "Well, I*ll make one, damn quick,*
and the merchant pulled out a pistol -that stopped gold digging in the streets.
Besides a gold belt, a belt of copper,
bearing rock, crosses the country through
Rough and Ready township, as well as iron,
and other minerals.
The Black Bear on Deer Creek was mined
again in 1950. .
Oscelolo Ledge, one mile south of Rough
and Ready, was prospected by Eudey, Euren,
Truan, under contract with E.W.Roberts.
Rich pocket of "Bunch" was found. The Iron
Clad mine, many stockholders, supposed to be
a good undeveloped mine.
The Mistletoe mine on the A.W.Stewart
place, one mile from Rough and Ready, and
many others, supposed to. be rich, but not
as yet uncovered.

Many others ready to be opened up for
gold production.
1850 votes casted at Rough and Ready
one thousands.
Mrs. Ida Reanler's father, John Elster,
came to California in 1876; came to Dutch
Flat, You Bet, and then to the old Stull
Ranch at Indien Springs. Mrs. Reanier's
husband worked at Robinson's blacksmith
shop, near Indian Springs.
MURDER AND SUICIDE
On May 28th, 1855, three Frenchmen were
working at mining on Squirrel Creek for two
companies. They lived in a cabin together.
One of them got fired, and it worried him
so badly to see the others working, that he
shot one fatally, wounded the other, and
put a bullet into his own brain.
Delano left Aurora, N.Y. on account of
his health. Joined the gold rush by crossing the plains in 1849, via the Oregon
trail, to Sacramento, than to Bidwell's
Google
Bar. Started a store at a place called
Dawlytown, became captain of a wagon train.
Went to Marysville and made about $400.00,
drawing crayon portraits of miners. Made
an effort to sell lots in a new town. Related to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Got the
Gold Lake hoax gold fever business ruined.
Came to Nevada County, got the name of "Old
Block."
Frank Ennor, driving a six horse team
down the grade near Rough and Ready, had a
runaway, lead team bells ringing, Ennor
jumped clear just as the team and wagon went
over the grade, killing some horses.
Simon French, owner of the Anthony
House, purchased ¥7,000.00 worth of gold
from some Indians.
Delano mingled as Express Agent, author,
leader, banker, agent, later on as a Banker
on his owm account. Mine owner, deptty
miner's Surveyor, City Treasury, Alderman,
Citizen beyond compare. He handled hugh
sums of gleaming Fifty Dollar Slugs. .Names
connected with delivery to the Delano Bank,
or to him as Express Agent. Forty ounces
of gold from Rough and Ready, John Robinson, Brandt, John Early, Hill, Harnett,
Sharp, Thos. Canschoich. Delano was a good
friend of Lola Montez.
In a dance-hall, a cousin Jack offered
a lady entertainer some gold coins if she
would sing "God Save the King." Up jumped
a Yankee, pulling out a large gold nugget
and said, “If you don't sing "God Save the
King," and sing "Yankee Doodle” you can have
this nugget." Cousin Jack had to listen to
"Yankee Doddle."
. Next day at mining, the two started feuding over the nights incident, and the mine
foreman told them to fight it out and then
get back to work. The fight commenced over
hugh boulders as the mining reached the hard
pan stage. The Yankee won again. The fore-~
man pulled out a quart bottle of Bourbon
whiskey, broke it over a boulder, and said,
"I hereby christen the place Bourbon Hill."
It was called to the Compiler's notice
some large slabs of granite laying around.
So, sure enough, they are at Rough and Ready.
In early days were to be used to build a
bank at Rough and Ready, and Grass Valley
was to be moved here.
As we know State Capitols, County seats
and Republics were in a nervous state, and
one event is that the day before the election was to be held, to see if Rough and
Ready or Nevada City was to be the County
Seat. Rough and Ready had a fire, and said
to be set to put her out of the County seat
race. Even in 1951, Alpha Kappa Phi confederates took over Rough and Ready in fun.
Going through Rough and Ready in 1951,
a jackass with a bell, leading a large herd
of beef cattle from Indian Springs to the
high mountains. Mr. Church trained this
jackass to lead cattle. The gate is thrown
open, out comes the jackass, heads off and
gets about 20 feet, looks back, and no
cattle following.
Jackass turns, goes back to the gate,
inside nods his head back and forth at the
cattle, then makes a run through the gate,
cattle following, as if they understood.
Jackass keeps in the lead. ‘there he goes,
the cattle follow along.
