METHON FOUND TOHALT BEAR RAIDS ON BEES DAVIS, Jan. —— Electrically charged ‘fences aan mountain apiaries ‘have shown great promise as a protective measure against bears who show a preference for honey ‘produced in the hive, according to evidence gathered by members of the staff of the ‘College of Agriculture on the Davis campus of the University of California. Central Valley beekeepers have found it difficult to maintain their apiaries during the summer due to lack of forage, the presence of poisonous dusts on crops, and the flowering of buckeye in ‘the foothills. Many of them have been dealing with this problem by movinlg their hives into the mountains during the summer season. However, in the mountains many apiaries have been raided and: destroyed by bilack bears equipped with the proverbial ‘‘sweettooth.’’ Possibility of protecting these establishments by ringing them with electrically charged fences was tested by T. I. Storer, professor of zoology. G. H. Vansell, associate in, the Agricultural Experiment Station, and Ben D. Moses, associate professor of agriculture in Touemite National Park, and in Lassen county showed that in most cases this method can be used with success. , The University scientists say that amateurs should never under circumstances attempt to install their own electric fences. None of the equipment at present available for such installations meets the approval of the California Industrial Accident Commission. The fences can be installed safely only by experts. FIFTY PERCENT OF S. F. RELIEF HOME SAN FRANCISCO, Jan, 13.—Fifty per cent of the inmates of the big Laguna Honda Relief Home in San FYancisco are foreign born, and but 5 per cent of all inmates come from established private homes, according to a report made by Dr. J. C. Geiger, clinical professor of epidemiology in ‘the University of California Medical School and health officer of San Francisco. Eighty five per cent of the inmatsingle, er alcoholism nor cancer assume the importance that migh't ‘be expected for such an aged group, and there is . a low incidence of tuberculosis, due }.to the transfer of tubercular patients to the San Francisco county hospital. One surprising factor noted in the study was that 40 per cent of the inmates entered the home under 60 years of age and 26 per cent entered in the age group 50 to 59 years. The colored population is only 4 per with the Chinese leading this class. ification. Another noteworthy fact is that a} number of those who leave the institution to aecept the old age: pen'. sion of $35 a month are compelled) “because the amount is}. to return fneufficient or the personal budget is not’ i in a satisfactory manner” The Universtiy of California Medical Schoo] maintains close relations with the Laguna Honda Home as well as with the city and county hospital, which iis staffed to a great extent by doctors from both the StanINMATES, ALIENS garet Davis, Edna Doolittle, Amy MecCraney, Miss Margaret Wyant and ‘Carl Murchie. \ RETURNS FROM CHINA 2 Methodist Episcopal Bishop Arthur J. Moore, returning from Shanghai to his headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, declared that more than 100 missions, hospitals and schools have been destroyed in the war between China and Japan. ‘‘A century’s work has been dissipated,” he said. SKEET CHAMP ' Phil Miller, French Lick Springs, Ind., skeet and trapshoot expert, is three-way national champ. He missed only 31 out of 3,050 targets in 1938 to win high average honors. He is also Class AA champ and head of the Class A doubles group.
