The following article which is from

vicinity:
“Pete Williams tells us of a young
man whois ‘doing Red Bluff ina
very clever manner. He bnys.a
qu.ntityof turpentine and boiled oil,
and pots itin a bottle with a flaming
lable, ‘Manufactured by Philadelphia
Furniture Co,’’ and sells it at 50 or 25
cents a bottle ‘just} as he can get it.
He manufactures this fine article for
furniture and piano polish on the porcli
uf the old cobblestone warehouse, and
is, said tu he doing a land office ' business. His oil and turpentine coste
about 75 cents a gallon, and if business
is good he mukes from $5 to $7 out of
it. It makes a polish for a day or two,
but anybody can buy a gallon for what
they pay for three or four ounces,
Mr. Williams played quite a good
joke on him. After his first sales he
got quite independent and boiled oil
was not good enough for him. He
asked Pete to give him a little raw oil.
he latter cooly filled the bottle with
fish oil and the seller did not know the
difference. If any of our citizens purchased any. piano polish that smells
ruther “fishy ,’’ they will know where
it cume from.
He will probably visit towns down
the road and they should look out for
him. ,
ICE WATER.
A Healthful Drink if Used With
Discrétion. ‘
In the opinion of the editor of Sanitary Volunteer, the official organ of the
New Hampshire board of health,there
isa great deal of sentiment and many
opinions regarding the use of ice water
that vanish when the light of reason
and experience is turned upon them.
Che fact is that ice water; drank ‘slowly and in moderate quantities is a
healthful and invigorating drink.
There is no doubt that ice. is a great
sunitury agent, and every family ought
to be provided with it during the warmer monthsof the year. It is true
that the inordinate use of ice water, or
ts uxe under some special conditions
and circumstances, is attended with
great danger; x0 is the improper use of
uny other drink food. The assumption that iced water is danyerous, and
hat iced tea, or iced coffee, or iced
lew onade is a harmless substitute, is a
délusion. As the source of danger feared by some is the degree of culd; we
fail to see clearly. how fli¥or modifiesthe effect of temperatare, There
are ind.viduals, undoubtedly, who
cannot drink ice waier without injury, aod who ought never to use it,
bot to a great majyrity of persons it is
releshing and healthful, Its use, temperate ind discreet, isin no w ay to be
coudemned, which cannot be suid pl,
some of its substitu‘es.

How to Keep a House Cool.
The proper way tokeep the ous
cool and comfortable, these hot Sum:

A LUCKY TRIAL.
The Good Fortune Which Followed.
It affords me great pleasure to send to you
this voluntary statement of my experience in
testing the merits of Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla, Forthe past five yearsI have been
troubled with an exceedingly sluggish liver,
including loss of appetite and distress after
eating, pains in the back and kidneys, and
boils around my neck and face. I tried many
liver remedies, only getting temporary relief.
I was recommended to try a bottle of “The
California Remedy” Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla as atest, and. while taking the first
bottle I became convinced of its merits, for I
could feel it was working a change in me,
T took five bottles, and during that time my
troubles left me. Everything is working ful}
and regular, in fact it has cleansed, purified
and braced me up generally. ' I feel Hike anotherman. You are at liberty to use this as
