And the other is a man who knows at least as much about the town as any citijzen in it—I mean Harry Ferdinand Sofge. our secretary of commerce for 9 years. One of the least used but most picturesque etreets in Nevada City is Washington Road. This narrow’ lane winds between giant poplars and an occasional tiny house,\, progressing iby very easy stages f Coyote Street’ just below the-. tarium, behind the Hummelt and -Goyne properties to come out on the highway at city limite. One of Nevada Kity’s old home industries, the Nevada City Bottling Works is on Washington Road. . It’s one of those quaint, out-of-theway of town, that you’re liable to never know exists, unless by luck you stumble upon it. It’s the sort of thing that the artist, Clifford Warner used to draw and paint go well. ‘Warner really caught the spirit of ‘Nevada City. i Our bright modern court house and city hall left Warner cold. What ne liked to do was find a tumble-down #hack sleeping under. a towering poplar.A versatile artist, Warner would paint the house im a very advanced state of: decay, and the great} poplar would seem taller than it actually was. His. sensitive, soft-toned work, wasn’t popular here, but wold very well at Gump’s in San Francisco. Some’ day I am going to make a ANYTHING IN HIS COLUMN TO FILL IT UP; let’s talk about something interesting. Like about how the town looks when the sun is just rolling up from behind Banner Mountain in the morning, gilding the tops of the hillg-and the spires of churhes with pink and gald. Or how it looks in the afternoon when the red-yellow sun sinking in the direction of the Marysville Buttes, paints Los Hill and the houses and trees on West Broad Street a-bright mellow orange. ? "i AUFRDON ELLIS TELLS Continued From Page One log Cabin enar Camptonville was completed under contract to the Parke Construction Com ¥~ from forest highway funds. An adjacent section of 2:5 miles between Wilson’s and Camptonville, started in 1946 and now under construction by Teichert and Son will shortly be completed, Both of these eontracts with others planned for this year will do much toward opening up the timber ern Yuba County and: western Sierra County. Contracts: were awarded in 1946 totaling in excess of $1,000,000 for new timber utilization road into the Auburn working circle. Construction has ‘begun on fourteen miles or road and a 500 foot steel truss bridge across the North Fork of th: Middte Fork of the American River. This road, when completed will open up¢ an area of approximately one billion planned for a sustained cutting opston at or near Forest Hill with remanufacturing plant burn. area. Ellis concluded his report with the Statement that while each division owed increased production and accomplishment during 1946 plans already on hand for post war projects, which have now been doferred for years are dependent upon increased allotments in 1947. “For instance,” he.said, “most of our lookout towers, dwellings, telephone lines, roads, are in°a poor condition of répair: no in the ‘Audrawing of what a human being who is going to run a small country news paper and printing business, should Took like.
