SCOUTERS HEAR —
JUDGE PULLEN
AT AREA DINNER
Seventy eight scouters and their
wives attended the \Tahoe Area
council dinner Tuesday evening at
Auburn to hear Judge J. F. Pullen of
Sacramento, chairman of Region 12
of the Boy Scouts of America. Twenty seven council officers for 1939
were installed by._former council
president K. D. Robinson. Thirty
nine scouts and scouters to receive
5-10-15 year veteran rating were
awerded certificates of service by
Judge J.-B. Landis of Placer county.
All districts of the area were represented. Judge Pullen commended
the men of the area for their work
in scouting in commenting on the
important necessity of training youth
in these times of rapidly changing
social anid economic conditions. ‘‘Only
will youth advance as far as we are
able to train and prepare them for a
life of active, useful citizenship.”’
Entertainment included songs by
Lou Chesbro of Auburn and a group
of scouts dramatizing a safety skit
on scouting. District Attorney Lowell
L, Sparks, elected president of the
council for his third term, presided
and complimented scoutmasters, cubmasters and their assistants for their
efforts and good work directly with
the boys and young men of their
units. Judge G. L. Jones of Nevada
county was mamed to represent the
area on the national council.

FORBES TELLS OF
HEVROLET’S NEW
A
B. C. Forbes, well known financial authority and writer, recently
contributed. a statement concerning
the training given ‘by ‘(Chevrolet’s
School for Dealers’ Sons instituted
two years ago by William E. Holler,
general sales manager for Chevrolet.
“There were thirty one students’
writes Mr. Forbes, “‘including three
from foreign countries.
“Mr. Holler asked each one'to tell
his name, his habitation and what
he was deriving from his specialized
training. Numbers of them, . learned, were college grauates.-I was particularly interested to find that one
hailed from a part of South Africa
very familiar to me because of my
early residence in that country. Never before had I met a group of young
men ‘who could talk so well on their
feet. Explanation: They are drilled
in public speaking by their instructor, T. O. McLamighlin, a Rhodes
Scholar, the blue ribbon of international scholarship.
“T congratulated this upstanding
body of young men on the unique
privilege. they ‘were enjoying, the
privilege of receiving the finest kind
of training to follow in their fathers’ footsteps. I emphasized that the
problem confronting most American
youths today is to find any kind of
a niche in the work-a-day world,
and that they should account themselves peculiarly fotunate, not only
in finding a toe-hold, but in being
able to enjoy the very best practical
schooling to fit them to go even farther than their fathers.
“Young though. America is, we
have a number ‘of business enterprises whose employees include second
and even third generation representatives—a condition quite common
in the older countries of Europe. Almost always where such a condition
exists, the relationships between
employer and employed are satisfactory, amicable, solid, stable’”’
