The event was celebrated in approriate fashion recently by the 700
members of the California Hydraulic Mining association, representing
the owners and operators in the area.
Long have they waited for the joyous occasion and many an: ‘old pioneer passed on without living to see
his hopes realized of fingering the

[pitiated ‘Project
But, it ; was a former federal powFrank ©. Bonner of Piedmont, California, who initiated and pressed
through the project with the loyal
help of Congressman Harry L. Englebright and United States Senator
Hiram W. Johnson.
Bonner organized the mining interests and land owners along the
ridge, drew the original plans and
estimates, which were finally accepted by the United States army engineers and congress as warrant for
sétting aside old reports saying the
proiect was impracticable, and Englebright got congressional sanction
for the government engineers to take
over the job of building the ‘huge

Justified Hopes
Completed in record time, despite
a six months setback,’ due to last’
winter’s torrential rains, which destroyed the cofferdam, the Upper
Narrows dam received its initial test
at Christmas time, and justified the
hopes of government engineers and
contractors. A raging torrent of watThe EVES

Will Lift Curse
The Upper Narrows dam has proved that it will be possible to loft the
curse on hydraulic mining in California) and to recover. hundreds of
millions of placer gold now lying
idly in the thills of the Mother Lode
country.
Due to the enormous amounts of
silt and gravel washed down from
the hills by hydraulic mining operations in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, the
beds of some of the main rivers in
the valleys below the Mother Lode
country were raised as much as 15
feet. In -time the surface of the rivers rose above the level »f the adjoining rich farming lands, furcing
the farmers, federal and state authorities to engage in a constant
race to raise the levees along the
riverbanks high enough to keep the
waters from flooding huge cultivated areas. .
