NEVADA CITY NUGGET
Memorial Hall, Grass Valley, Saturday Evening, January 30, 1937
VERY YEAR infantile paralysis cripples hundreds of children. Rich and poor the dread disease, makes no distinc:
tion, but in the families of the poor the visitation of this
scourge is devastation beyond description. The struggle
for food for the other children must go on regardless of what happens
to the crippled child. A roof, clothing and\food must be prvided whether the afflicted child dies or lives to be a hopeless cripple.
The President of the United States, himself one of the casualties
in this never-ending war upon infantile paralysis, his instituted the
‘President's Birthday Ball,’’ which this years fails on January 30, next
Saturday evening, at which all generous and civic minded people are
given an opportunity to contribute toward the curing and alleviation
of the suffering little children due to this plague.

Money raised two years ago at the President's Birthday Ball,
helped to make life easier and to cure, partially, three local children afflicted with infantile paralysis. Under the arrangement made with the
national committee 70 per cent of the receipts of the ball go for the
benefit of the local victims of the infaritile paralysis. Thirty per cent
goes:to the endowment of Warm Springs, Georgia; where hundreds of “
little children, suffering from the disease are treated.
This year the President's Birthday Ball is more, far more, than a
general community dance in Memorial Hall, Grass Valley. There will
be an excellent program preceding the ball, which gives anyone, whether he enjoys dancing or not, his money’s worth.
All the forces which have made Nevada County noted for its charity, its kindness, its thoughtful generosity for those in want, in sickness
or bereavement are mustering for this great annual event.
