. "AG PROBLEM IN
SOUTH AFRICA
Thanks to restrictions on the “big
game hunters” who used to; go to
Africa and shoot everything in sight,
elephants are increasing notin size,
put in numbers.
In fact, the elephant ““housing’’
0 joblem in some areas is becoming
E rious. There is danger of elephant4p\ overcrowding.
ater buffaloes, too are’ having
amilies now than in the old
d_a call for consideration of
thew problems is made in the current number of Nature.
Other species, such as the antelope and giraffe, also are discussed
in an article on the preseervation of
game animals of Africa.
‘‘The other two-successful species,
buffalo and_ elephant,
plied simply. because they are large,
dangerous animals, not easily tackled
with muzzle-loaders, says the writer.
“In a buffalo hunt in 1930 when,
TNhear the Fafue flats, a. herd was
driven, according to custom, into—a
‘selected swamp, the toll of dead was
thirty buffaloes and seven of their
native hunters.
“The amazing rapidityof the increase of ithis dedfructive species
demands a planned effort at reducing their numbers and maintaining
a@ constant check upon their increase:
i whe same may be said about the
elepnrant, of which there are at least.
12,000 in Northern Rhodesia. and
which are believed to have trebied
in numbers during the lastthirty
years.
‘Although there is no general excess, there are districts where the
herds:are rapidly becoming disturbingly large.
“The elephant must run no risk of
“extermination, but the cultivation
8. and the work of-man must also be
considered.” =
A straight problem, it is said,
he rulers of every part of
wie wild fauna to be left
chances at the hands of
Ee pisiedion which has been
d to kill\without ,restraint
e of the steady encroachagriculture, Commerce and
Br is it to be shielded for its
Own sake and for the sake of poster™ ity? Everywhere (says the writer)
the answer is that it must be shielded.
. An approximate estimate of the
~ humber of game animals:in Northern Rhodeseia alone is given. Among
the rarer forms are the giraffe (3,000), black faced impala (500),
rhinorecos (1,500), yellow backed
__duiker (about 1,500), blue wildebeast (200), hippopotamis (3,000),
while at the other end of the scale
are species such as the zebra (59,000), buffalo, roan antelope,

CONSTABLE PROVES TO
BE A GOOD GLAZIER
CAMPTONVILLE, Jan. — few
days ago a young hawk lit in an apple tree below the post office and
Constable John M. Jaynes hurled a
stone at it; the bird ducked, and the
stone struck the tree. glancing
through one of the large windows
in the second story of the_ store
building belonging to Judge Acton
M. Cleveland. The judge did not
know who did it at first and gave
all the small boys in the town a thrid
degree grilling without effect. Then
Jaynes confessed and spent Tuesday
afternoon putting in a new. window,
and the court adjudged that the constable is a good. glazier.
