HIGH SCHOOL
NOTES
By JEAN MARTZ
Tite Grass Valley high shoo Miners defeated the Nevada City Yellowjackets in two very hard fought and
close games Friday night. Both of
the Nevada City teams proved to be}
at their very best and gave Grass
Valley who were quite confident of
an easy victory a great surprise.
The B game began in favor of the
Jackets. The first quarter was very
fast and close. Tobiassen played a
very good game and seemed to hit
the basket every time. Pingree played an outstanding game too. he
starting lineup was: Tobiassen,
Ruth, Pingree, McCraney, Martin. R.
Joyal, Novac, Miller and Thomas saw
action in the game also. Pingree acted as captain. Grass Valley led at the

. by even a larger score 25-12. In the
ifourth quarter Nevada City again
clicked and came up to make the
closing score 23-30. The Jackets
played their best game of the year
and if they play as well when they
meet the Miners on their own floor,
the score may go the, other way. The
‘ollowing boys made points: Pingree, high point man, 12; Tobiassen,
9 and (Martio 2.
A GAME EXCITING
The A game was even more exciting than the B. The starting lineup
was Childers, Gates, Lotz, Doolittle,
and Kopp. Brown and Reeder each
entered the game once for a_ few
minutes play. During the first quarter the boys guarded so closely that
the Miners did not get a basket,
while our boys counted up. five
Oints. In the second quarter it was
loser and the Miners came up to
make the score 8 to 8 at the half.
The Miners got a good many of their
points by fouls on the Nevada team.
The third quarter was the most exciting of the whole evening. The
Jackets kept ahead by one or two
-oints and near the end the Miners

QUAIL NESTS
DAVIS, Jan. 30.—Because of their
nest robbing habits, ground squirrels
are an important thenace to CaliSan Joaquin and Sacramento valleys.
This has been revealed by investigations conducted in Madera county by the Cooperative Qail Management Commiteee headed by. T. I. Storer, professor of zoology, on the Davis
campus of the University of California. Details of the studies which
. were carried on at the San* Joaquin
Experimental Range by Ben Gladfor the
committee, were contained in a reeent article in California Fish and
Game. Funds ¥for the project were
supplied by the United States Forest Service.
The ground squirrels were literally
caught in the act of robbing quail
nests and carrying. away the eggs.
Further evidence that they are important nest destroyers was found in

burrows in five different places.
Some indication of how drastically
the squirrels may reduce quail populations was obtained from the. results of a rodent control campaign
carried on over an area of some 300
acres. The area in which poison had
been spread showed an increase of
154 per cent in quail population between February 1936, and February
1937. During the same period quail
in an unpoisoned area of 350 acres
showed an increase of only 45 per
cent. In Glading’s opinion the increase in the unpoisoned area may
have resulted from an overflow of
quail from the area in which the
ground squirrels had béen reduced in

STRUGGLE FOR
PRESIDENCY IN
MEXICO FORSEEN
LOS ANGELES. Ja Jan. — The
next few months are ee to see a
struggle in Mexico between the forees of organized labor and the army,
which traditionally has ‘been a
source of political power.
This is the prediction of Dr. Russell H. Fitzgibbon, assistant professor of political science on the Los
Angeles campus of ‘the University of
California, Dr. Fitzgibbon is an authority on Latin-America.
“The leader of the present dominant labor uuion group, Lombardo
Toledano, may be President Cardenas’ opponent at the national elections in 1940,” Dr. Fitzgibbon pointed out. “The army and labor have
not gotten along very well and a
struggle between those two forces
is likely.
“Death in battle.of the military
leader, Cedillo, one ‘time secretary of
labor, eliminates one of Cardenas’
opponents. Calles is an exile in California. Thus the split ‘between Cardenas, and Lombardo, Toledona, the
two esent political leaders of importance, is not unlikely.”
As for President Cardenas, the
present chief executive of. Mexico, his
popularity with the people is rivaled only by that the President Juarez, the “Mexican Abraham Lincoln,”
believes Dr. Fitzgibbon.
