those citizens of mysterious antiquity from a never to -be forgotten
pageant on the stage of the Alcazar
Theatre this week, They are all a
part .of the play “The Sun and !’’ by
night.
“The Sun and I” is, as claimed, the
biggest and* most pretentious produrtion ever attempted outside Now
York Cita by the Federal Theatre
and it has just claim as being one
‘. of the finest from every aspert. The
scenic settings are superb, thé ¢costumes brilliantly beautiful, the tempo
in perfect step with tihhe theme and
the acting more than a mere adequate, the whole, an artistic triumph
for the government theatre.
“The Sun and.1” draws an easily
recognizable parallel ‘between’ the
problems. of that mysterious age
when the pyramids were built and
those of practically every country in
the world today. Good and bad government, famine and drought, water
ad food conservation, love, hate, and
intrigue are but a few of the ingredjents that make for interest throughout this spectacular staging. Dictators, it seems, were not uncommon
even in that far off day. “The Sun
and I” pictures Joseph—of the ‘coat
of many colors—as a dictator who
without the alignment of
the soldreckoned
the priests of the temple,
jyery and. the people themselves, and
who. brought disaster om himself.
JWill Vedder, Leon Forbes, Vera
Rothery, Sylvia Karoll -and Ralph
Freud, who directed the play, are
outstanding.
