It is said to be the most. gripping and_ realistic showing of human emotions. that Warner Bros. have offered this season, which has been remarkable in their history. Miss Davis and ks Hopkins advance from girlhood to middle age, as the actian progresses in the story of two women who dwell in the same home but whose hearts are filled with hatred of each other. Across that stretch ,of years the two live under the same .roof—-hating each other, never acchieving reciprocal sympathy or understanding until both are well into middle age, and the young daughter . of one is leaving the ancient home;stead for matrimony. Miriam Hdp‘kins is a widow, with two children of her own. The old maid is Bette . Davis. BERKELEY, Jan: 4.—Highty huge riveted steel joints of various types used in building the San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge have been tested by being pulled apart at the University of California, with results highly graitfying to the designers of the bridge and others interested in construction. Like the-University’s previous tests on large’ structural models of the bridge,. the tests of joints served as a check on the engineering calculations and as a guide in future designs to secure ‘even greater safety and econmy. ‘ e Prior to the building of the bridge, ‘joints of such record size could not be tested directly. because of the limited capacity of precise testing machines. The tests were made possible by the-giant precise testing machine which had recently been installed in ‘the engineering materials laboratory of the University.
