A Better Pet Than the Cat.A little 6-yrear-old girl on Capitol avenue
had a great -affection for the cat, She fondled
it, put a cap on its bead and called it her
“darling baby doll.” A few-weeks since »
real baby sister came to the house “with the
loctor” one night. The little girl was de
lighted. “It’s a real baby sister, and ‘a live
one, isn’t it, mamma?” she said,
tainly,” said the mother. Without saying «
word, the little yirl went down stairs, found
the cat aud kicked if out of doors, saying.
“Clear out, you old fool, you ain’t a live baby,
and we don’t want you here.”—Hartiord

Breaking It Gently. .
In the days of ’49, as we are informed by
John Jones, one of the original argonauts, a
member of a party of newly arrived miners
strayed away from his companions and was
destroyed by a grizzly. The friend upes
whom it devolved to “‘break the news gentiy”
to the bereaved parents showed himself equal
to the occasion by writing tothem the following laconic letter:
“Mr. Hobson: Deer su he Kiot«s bas ete
yer sun’s bed opb.”—Omna World.

and be greeted with unniistakable evidences
of the fumes of whisky!” “Qji’d think, sor,
