MONDAY, JANUARY. 7,19 1929 ee THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET, CALIFORNIA ——— HE NEVADA A CITY NUGGET Published weekly « on Mondays at Nevada City, California, and enteréd as mail matter of the second class in the postofaia at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. ; SUBSCRIPTION RATES S Year, any address in California, in advance Outside California, ir, U.S. 2.c.ccecncoessseeeeeeeeeene eee CE ee rape ee Three Mcnths eo end sop 2, A Legal Newspaper of General Circulation for Nevada City. and Nevada County, as definded by legal statute. Printed and published at Nevada City. Arthur A. Willoughby E®ie P. Willoughby COZY CORNER CHAT 1.00 ceoate and Publisher Associate THE STARTING of a New Year ads a host of good resolutions made, many of which soon fall by the roadside but the idea of resolutions is a good one at that if it tends to sweep some of the cobwebs out of our systems and pick up some of the loose threads. The Nugget has been some resolutions also and you will notice some changes ir the makeup of the paper:this issue which are intended to enhance its looks somewhat. At the rate the advertising is coming in we hope to keep an eight page issue more regularly. This. will make it possible to augment our local news service a great deal in several departments. The high school section has been making a great “hit since its inauguratior last fall and it has been very popular with the student body The students under the careful tutelage of Miss Hoffmar have been producing a very creditable page. They prepare heir own copy, read the proof, write the heads and supervise the makeup, so that it has been an excellent training a no ex‘pense to the school either in money or in time lost from classes. ae making THE MINING NEWS which has been a leading feature of The Nugget since its very inception, has been bringing in guiries for sample copies from all over the United States and there is no doubt but that it has been focusing a great deal of attention on gold mining in Nevada and Sierra coun: fiés. It is noticeable that other papers about the state have been getting to publish more mining news which is a hope ful sign that plenty of publicity will be given the industry which made California possible as one of the great states of the Union. Gold mining looks to be coming back with vengeance and_ the coming year' will doubtless revival of interest in see a great this section of the state particularly where quartz mining first came into its own. The Mother Lode country is waking up once moxe into renewed activity particularly in Mariposa county which has been but a smal! producer for a number of years past. The splendid worh done by the mining department of the Sacramento Chambe of Commerce under the.direction of R. L. Kimmel in serid ing out copy to the press on mining developments over the stae is bearing abundant:-fruit. Items from The Nugget re _ printed in this bulletin are being widely copied. THE RATE AT WHICH the subscription renewals have been pouring in since notices were sent out the past mont} _ has been very encouraging to the publishers as it is the only “way they can judge as to whether their efforts are meeting with appoval: There have not been two dozen subscripticn: ordered stopped since the paper was started which is -cellent record for a new paper. The list is the time with no. solicitation being an ex climbing fast al’ done and we are on our way toward our second thousand. The advertising agencie’ ‘are waking to. he fact that there is a newspaper published at Nevaa City which covers a wide territory and is a good me dium to use: It is the hope of this paper that every busi ness man in Nevada City during the coming year will find it worth his while to be an advertiser in these columns if bu! for a small space to show a community interest in the home own paper. Our readers can help greatly in bringing thiabout by remarking to the business men that: are not repre sented in The Nugget that they ought to advertise in it The more advertisements, the larger the paper and the more news to read. It all goes hand in hand. _ THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is going ahead nicely under the secretaryship of W. H. Griffith. He looks to be ~an excellent man on the job, well qualified for the work and furthermore he is a resident of the community. The “oater type of secretary in boost work is largely fading out of the picture for when his bag of tricks and publicity is exhausted he usually moves to a new community. Nevada county wants no more shoestring promoters of any kind within her borders. In the end they do more harm than good. Mr. Gvriffth has been carrying on a work with the Lake Vera project that will accomplish a great deal in a tangible way for Ne vada City in years to come. It was fortunate for the com muntiy that it was possible to enlist his services for our boost organization. The membership of the organization should be largely built up, its finances more in volume and its sphere of usefulness can thus be greatly widened. So aR ee ee oe TWO NEW SUITS ARE STARTED AGAINST THE IRRIGATION DISTRICT Two more lawsuits against the Nevada Irrigation District were filed the past week to. add to the numerous other suits pending for various matters. The suits filed by Attorney. T.° L.. Chamberlain «of Auburn in behalf of a landowner of the irrigation district vitally aifects . the proposed new ond issue to clean up the debts incurred by the directors and the previous management amounting to some $600,009 and several hundred thousand more wanted to spend on the mountain works The irrigation district and the directors were named as defendants in the action whicia is intended to prevent the issuance of the new bonds through a restraining order. Herman Oest ‘appears as _— the plaintiff in the action and’ states that he is a taxpayer within the claimed boundaries of the irrigation district in Placer county and brings the action on his behalf as such land owner and taxpayer and also for all other landowners within the district. He alleges ‘that the bond mones were not expended as outlined in Reports 52, 56 and 77 issued by the engineer and that the present bond issue is to cover obligations incurred under previous contracts and to replace expenditures already made. He lists the Grass Valley office building as not being autorized in the bond expenditures. He states in his complaint that he asked to appear before the state bond certification conimission in regard to the issuance of the new bonds and that. the commission promised and agreed that no vonds would = be certified until he had been given an opportunity to be heard and that he understands that $500,000 have been certified in vio.
lation of such alleged promise. Martin Van Berg and fT. Be Flint have filed an action in Superior Court to quiet -title to 2000 inches of water in Canvon Creek used. to onerate the power plant at the Aret'e mine. The papers filed by F. T. Nilon as attorney aver that plaintiffs are the owners of such water right and have been’ in possession . of such for 18 years past. The irrigation district which is diverting the waters into Lake .Spaulding from Canyon Cheek\and the Yuba watrshed claims ah interest in the water adverse to the plaintiffs and the action is brought to quiet tite’ to the water in question. The Arctic mine has been closed down sinee the irrigation district cammenced operating the .Bowman Ham to lack of sufficient in Canyon Creek to operate the power plant and numerous par= owing water leys are said to have developed, ~othing of moment.
